No. 19 Volleyball Sweeps McNeese to Close Weekend

Cougars move to 3-0 on the season after a solid Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup
HOUSTON – The No. 19 University of Houston Volleyball team posted its first sweep of the season in a 3-0 win over McNeese on Sunday evening behind 11 kills from graduate Nena Mbonu.
The Cougars (3-0) coasted to its 17th straight win inside the Fertitta Center, holding McNeese (0-4) to a negative hitting percentage in two of the three sets and a .010 efficiency (19-18-98) across the match. It's the lowest Houston has held an opponent to since the Cougars limited Southern to a -.013 percentage on Aug. 26, 2017.
Houston had a pair of Cougars make their career debuts as true freshman Ella Busey and redshirt freshman Ella Wendel both saw action for the first time. Busey finished with a pair of kills and digs, while Wendel tallied two kills on two attempts. Each also tallied a block.
Graduate Morgan Janda posted her second double-double of the season with 19 assists and 10 digs. Graduate Nena Mbonu shined as well, posting a .526 hitting percentage with 11 kills. Junior Kellen Morin continued to be unbeatable on the net, tallying eight blocks to bring her total to 19 on the weekend. Senior Kate Georgiades posted double-digits for the 78th time in her career with a match-best 15, while senior Annie Cooke tallied 15 assists and added a kill.
SET ONE
Houston started hot, posting a 3-0 run to start. McNeese tallied their first point on a Carissa Chainey kill, but the Cougars followed it up with another 7-0 run featuring two kills and a block from Morin. Up 10-1, Houston continued to control the set, ultimately winning the frame 25-13 behind three kills from graduate Kenna Sauer and Mbonu.
Overall, the Cougars tallied 14 kills on 31 attempts, posting only two errors while also scoring 14 digs and four blocks, including solo efforts from Morin and Sauer.
SET TWO
After trading points with McNeese to begin the second, Houston again controlled the set, establishing a lead with a 5-0, charged by four kills from Mbonu, run to push the score to 8-3. After ceding a kill, the Cougars used three kills from Sauer to power 8-0 run that extended their lead to 16-4. The Cowgirls closed the gap to eight points later in the frame, shrinking Houston's lead to 20-12, but the Cougars finished on a 5-0 stretch that included Busey's first collegiate kill to win the set.
Houston posted five blocks in the frame, with Morin participating in all five. Georgiades also aided the Cougars' defensive effort with seven digs while Mbonu paced Houston's offense with five kills.
SET THREE
On the verge of a sweep, Houston wasted no time in establishing a 3-0 lead in the third set. McNeese closed the gap to 5-4, but Houston never relinquished the lead, eventually extending its advantage to 10 at 20-10, then won five of the last seven points to seal the straight-set win, 25-12.
Graduate Abbie Jackson tallied seven kills in the set, while junior Katie Corelli went a perfect 3-for-3 on her attempts and Wendel also went a perfect 2-for-2.
UP NEXT
The Cougars start a nine-match road stretch that lasts over a month with a two-match tourney at Texas State. Houston starts the weekend on Sept. 1 with a 4 p.m. match against North Texas, then wraps up the weekend with a 3 p.m. Sept. 2 match against host Texas State.
