
Reily Paces Men’s Golf in NCAA Regional Second Round

Junior shoots 3-under 69 on Tuesday at The Reserve at Spanos Park; Final Round on Wednesday
STOCKTON, Calif. – University of Houston junior Austyn Reily drained a team-high five birdies on the way to a 3-under 69 to lead the Cougars during the Second Round of the NCAA Stockton Regional at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 2-under 286 to move to 12th in the team standings with a score of 581.
Starting his day off No. 1 on the 7,315-yard, par-72 course, Reily made birdie on the par-4 third hole and added additional birdies on No. 6 and No. 9 on his front nine.
The Pottsboro, Texas, native endured a bogey on No. 10 to start his back nine but returned to 3-under with a birdie on the par-5 11th hole. Reily added his final birdie of the day on the par-5 16th hole and rose 17 places in the individual standings to tie for 31st at 1-under 143.
Reily wasn't the only Cougar to break par in Tuesday's play. Redshirt freshman Jacob Borow posted a score of 2-under 70 and was tied for 67th at 151.
The Lake Jackson, Texas, native fought through a bogey on No. 1 and returned to even par with a birdie on the next hole. Fortunately, that would be his lone bogey of the day as he posted birdies on No. 6 and No. 11 and closed the day with seven straight pars.
Senior Alexander Frances was tied for 145 and became the 11th student-athlete in program history to record 10,000 strokes during his award-winning career. Junior Marcus Wochner was tied for 53rd at 147, while senior Braxton Watkins was tied for 71st at 153.

No. 4 Arizona State held the team lead at 555 to finish two shots ahead of No. 16 Stanford. No. 28 Oregon and No. 46 BYU were tied for third at 560, while LSU stood in fifth at 562. Denver (563), No. 38 Liberty (565), No. 9 Washington (567), No. 32 Nevada (570) and UC Davis (572) rounded out the Top 10.
On the individual leaderboard, RJ Manke (Washington), Carson Griggs (Denver), Jose Luis Ballester (Arizona State), Barclay Brown (Stanford) and BYU teammates David Timmins and Carson Lundell were tied for first at 7-under 137.
Drew Doyle (LSU), Owen Avrit (Oregon) and Mason Andersen (Arizona State) were tied for seventh at 138.
The top five teams and low individual not on an advancing team will compete at the NCAA Championships, set for May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
This marks the second straight season in which the Cougars advanced to the NCAA Regional under Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke and the eighth time during his Houston career.
This was the first time the Cougars have played in California since the 2017 NCAA Stanford Regional.

A year ago, the Cougars finished ninth at the NCAA Kingston Springs Regional at Golf Club of Tennessee. Frances opened that tournament with a 69 and tied with Matt Cole for the team lead at 215.
In its history, Houston has recorded nine Top-Five team finishes in NCAA Regional play with four student-athletes capturing individual titles (Michael Perras, 2016 NCAA Franklin Regional; Blair Hamilton, 2015 NCAA Lubbock Regional; Brett Callas, 2003 NCAA Central and Dean Larsson, 1994 NCAA Central).
