Four Men’s Golfers to Compete at U.S. Amateur Championship

Prestigious amateur event tees off Monday at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania with most Cougars since 1994
HOUSTON – Four University of Houston Men's Golf will tee off in the nation's premier amateur event during the 126th U.S. Amateur Championship, beginning Monday.Current seniors Grant Doggett and Chi Chun Chen earned their place in the event after winning qualifiers earlier this summer. Incoming senior transfer Sebastian Gamboa (Florida Gulf Coast) punched his ticket after winning the Puerto Rico Island Amateur Championship in June while three-year letterman Wolfgang Glawe qualified as a Top-100 points leader in the World Amateur Golf rankings.
The four Cougars marks the program's highest total at a single U.S. Amateur Championship since 1994. That year, Victor Schwamkrug, Eric Bogar, Lance Combrink, Eric Lohman and Shaun Savage played the Stadium Course at TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., with Schwamkrug advancing to match play.
More than 300 of the world's top amateur golfers will compete on the East Course at Merion Golf Club and on the Spring/Mill Course at Philadelphia Country Club. Following two rounds of stroke play, the top 64 golfers advance to match play culminating with the 36-hole championship match on August 16.
TEE TIMES
For the First Round, Doggett begins the day for the Cougars at 7:17 a.m. (CDT) Monday, at Philadelphia Country Club while Glawe follows shortly after at 7:21 a.m. (CDT) off No. 10 at Merion Golf Club.
Gamboa starts at 12:58 p.m. (CDT) at Merion Golf Club while Chen begins off No. 10 at 12:58 p.m. (CDT) at Philadelphia Country Club.
For Tuesday's Second Round, Gamboa will start the day off No. 10 at 7:28 a.m. (CDT) at Philadelphia Golf Club while Chen begins at the same time off No. 1 at Merion Golf Club.
Glawe tees off at 12:36 p.m. (CDT) at Philadelphia Country Club with Doggett going off No. 10 at 1:02 p.m., at Merion Golf Club.
The Top 64 players after 36 holes advance to match play, which begins Wednesday morning.
CADDIES
Chen's friend from his native Taiwan, Yen Wen Kuo, will work as his caddy at the U.S. Amateur Championship.
For the second straight season, Jerami Waddell, with whom Doggett regularly plays at their home club of Eagle Pointe Golf Club in Mont Belvieu, Texas, will carry his bag.
Gamboa's father, Eric, will caddy for his son, while Glawe will carry his own bag and not use a caddy at the tournament.

ABOUT CHI CHUN CHENChen is a three-year letterman for the Cougars. A year ago, he finished second among the Cougars with a 71.59 scoring average and 19 rounds of par or better while helping lead the team to the NCAA Bermuda Run Regional.
The Tainan, Taiwan, native fired a 64 in the Final Round of the Argent Financial Classic at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, La., in September 2025, becoming the 12th Cougar in school history to shoot 64 or lower.
Chen is equally impressive in the classroom. Majoring in sports administration., he is a two-time member of the Spring Academic All-Big 12 Conference Team and earned a place on the 2023-24 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie team as a freshman.
This will be Chen's second appearance at the U.S. Amateur Championship after competing at Hazeltine National Golf Club and Chaska Town Course in Minnesota in 2024.
ABOUT GRANT DOGGETTDoggett also is a three-year letterwinner for Houston. In 2024-25, he was one of four Cougars to compete in 37 rounds across 12 tournaments and finished third on the team with a 71.70 scoring average and 18 rounds of par or lower, including 11 in the 60s.
The Beach City, Texas, native enjoyed four Top-20 finishes and captured medalist honors at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Westwood Golf Club in Houston on September 7-9.
He recently was named to the 2025-26 Spring Academic All-Big 12 Conference Team and was a member of the league's Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team in 2023-24.
Doggett is making his second straight appearance at the U.S. Amateur Championship after competing at on the Lake and Ocean courses at The Ocean Club in San Francisco in 2025.
ABOUT SEBASTIAN GAMBOA
Gamboa – whose last name is pronounced Gam-Bo-Uh – joined the Cougars after an award-winning career for his first three seasons under new Mike Booker Head Coach Danna at Florida Gulf Coast.
Gamboa was a two-time All-Atlantic Sun Conference First-Team honoree in 2026 and 2025. He captured the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships individual title with a score of 12-under 204 after opening that postseason tournament with back-to-back 67s at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga., in April.
As a sophomore in 2024-25, Gamboa posted a 71.40 scoring average with 18 rounds of par or lower, including nine in the 60s.
He tied for second with a score of 9-under 204 at the Milton Makeup at Miami Shores Country Club in Miami Shores, Fla., thanks to a Final-Round 65, and tied for ninth at The Clerico at Oaks Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. In his next outing.
Gamboa posted a pair of Top-10 finishes as a freshman during the 2023-24 season and was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Golfer of the Week after firing three straight rounds in the 60s and tying for third at the Kapolei Invitational in Hawai'i during the fall season.
ABOUT WOLFGANG GLAWE
Glawe was a three-year letterman for the Cougars from 2022 to 2025 and earned a place on the PING All-Central Region Team as a senior in 2025.
Competing in 11 tournaments, Glawe led the Cougars with a 71.13 scoring average, three Top-Five finishes and 11 rounds in the 60s. The St. Leon-Rot, Germany, native finished second on the team with 16 rounds of par or better and added seven Top-20 showings.
Glawe closed the fall season with a record-setting performance at the White Sands WVU Invitational at Ocean Club Course in Paradise Island, Bahamas. He fired a bogey-free 63 in the First Round of that tournament to tie the Houston 18-hole record and join Michael Perras, Andy Sanders and Raymond Barr as the only Cougars to shoot last low in a round.
He competed in three NCAA Regionals and led Houston with a 17th-place showing at the NCAA Urbana Regional in 2025.
In addition to his on-course achievements, Glawe received his bachelor's degree in sports administration in May 2025.
