Graduate Hill leads Houston with double-double, game-high 20 points
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Houston women's basketball team fell to New Mexico on Saturday, 68-61 in The Pit in front of 4,568 fans despite a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds from graduate Tatyana Hill.
New Mexico (1-1) shot more than double the number of free throw attempts as Houston, 29-13, and made double the free throws, 24-12, even though the Cougars shot 92.3 percent from the charity stripe. Houston (0-2) took care of the ball and forced New Mexico into 23 turnovers with 16 steals.
Graduate Tatyana Hill scored 20 points for the first time since Jan. 19, 2020, just shy of her 24-point career-high, and recorded her 10th-career double-double by pulling down 11 boards. Redshirt senior Britney Onyeje posted a team-high five assists in the game as well.
Junior Laila Blair pitched in 18 points of her own and made two of Houston's three three-pointers in the game.
Five different Cougars scored from the field in the first quarter with Blair scoring the first basket for Houston.
The Cougars ended the second period with a 4-0 run to keep the game within three points at the half. Both teams scored 13 points in the second quarter, including five from Blair.
Houston's first lead came with 3:33 remaining in the third quarter thanks to Hill's layup on a perfectly crafted pass from senior Tiara Young. The Lobos went on a 10-2 run over the final three minutes of the quarter to take a 51-44 lead into the final period.
The third period was good for Hill, who scored a game-high 12 points in the quarter and pulled down four rebounds.
The Cougars made it a four-point game with 2:45 to play and then again with 0:33 to play, but were unable to cut the deficit anymore.
