
Houston Rolls in 3-0 Win over UTSA on Saturday

Abbie Jackson leads all with 16 kills; Coogs close tournament at 5 p.m., Saturday, vs. Albany
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – University of Houston senior outside hitter Abbie Jackson led all players with 16 kills as the Cougars claimed a 3-0 win (25-21, 25-21, 25-17) over UTSA on the second day of the Texas A&M Invitational inside Reed Arena on Saturday morning.
Rebounding from their first loss of the season Friday, the Cougars improved to 7-1 with the win. The Cougars close out the tournament when they meet Albany at 5 p.m., Saturday, inside Reed Arena. UTSA fell to 3-5.
The Cougars set the tone early in the match, jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the first set, and never looked back. The Roadrunners moved to within 13-11, but Houston scored six of the next eight points to seize control of the initial frame.
In the second set, the two teams went back and forth before UTSA used an 8-3 run to knot the game at 19-19 on Alison Jennings' kill. Fortunately, the Cougars rallied to score six of the set's final eight points for a 2-0 lead.
In the final frame, the Cougars built a 14-8 advantage and held off a late UTSA rally before scoring the set's final four points.
Sophomore setter Annie Cooke led the Cougars with 27 assists, while sophomore libero Kate Georgiades added a match-high 19 digs. Senior outside hitter Kennedy Warren and senior defensive specialist Torie Frederick added 11 digs apiece in the win.
Jennings and Hannah Lopez led UTSA with seven kills each, while Mekaila Aupiu totaled 16 assists. Mia Ybarra topped the Roadrunners with 16 digs.

Houston opens that tournament at 10 a.m., Sept. 17 as it faces Western Carolina before meeting the host Crimson Tide at 6 p.m., later that evening. The Cougars close out the tournament and their non-conference schedule when they meet Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m., Saturday.
From there, the Cougars open American Athletic Conference play inside the Fertitta Center. Houston meets Tulsa on Sept. 24 before taking on Wichita State on Sept. 26.
