
Houston Completes Saturday Sweep with Win over Albany

Cougars take 3-1 win in first meeting against the Great Danes
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – University of Houston senior outside hitter Kennedy Warren posted a season-high 16 kills to lead four Cougars in double digits in a 3-1 win (25-9, 25-21, 20-25, 30-28) win over Albany during the final day of the Texas A&M Invitational inside Reed Arena.

Warren finished with 16 kills and only one error on 38 attack attempts for an impressive .385 percentage against the Great Danes. Senior outside hitter Kortlyn Henderson and junior outside hitter Abbie Jackson finished with 13 kills apiece while senior middle blocker Isabel Theut totaled 12 kills to go with an .391 attack percentage.

It was Houston's second win of the day after taking a 3-0 victory over UTSA on Saturday's morning With Saturday's second win, the Cougars improved to 8-1 this season. Albany dropped to 3-7.

In the first set, the Cougars jumped out to a 7-1 lead, thanks in part to three service aces by Abbie Jackson and kills from Kennedy Warren and Isabel Theut. The Great Danes would move no closer than five points for the rest of the opening frame.

Houston held a 15-14 lead in the second half before scoring four straight points, thanks to a kill and two service aces from Warren and another kill from Henderson.

After Albany claimed the third set, the two teams went back and forth with extra points in the deciding frame. With the score tied at 22-22, the schools alternated the next eight points to a 26-26 tie. Albany grabbed a 27-26 lead on a kill by Oren Abutbul and a Houston attack error.

However, the Cougars knotted the match at 27-all on back-to-back kills from Jackson. After Albany's Regan Wright tied the match again at 28-28, Jackson gave the Cougars the lead for good with her final kill of the night, and the Cougars claimed the win following an Albany attack error.

Oren Abutbul led Albany with 11 kills, while Malea Stanton finished with 23 assists. Regan Wright totaled 14 digs to lead four Great Danes in double digits.

Houston opens that tournament at 10 a.m., Sept. 17 as it faces Western Carolina before meeting the host Crimson Tide at 6 p.m., later that evening. The Cougars close out the tournament and their non-conference schedule when they meet Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m., Saturday.

From there, the Cougars open American Athletic Conference play inside the Fertitta Center. Houston meets Tulsa on Sept. 24 before taking on Wichita State on Sept. 26.
