Junior outside hitter Abbie Jackson leads Cougars with 22 kills; Kate Georgiades with career-high 26 digs
NORMAN, Okla. – Junior outside hitter Abbie Jackson posted 22 kills and sophomore libero Kate Georgiades added a career-high 26 digs to lead the University of Houston Volleyball program to a 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 15-5) win over Oregon State inside McCasland Field House on Saturday during the final day of the Oklahoma Invitational.
Â
Jackson enjoyed the eighth 20-kill match of her career and her first of the 2021 season. Georgiades recorded the first 20-dig performance of her career and topped her previous personal best of 14 digs against Tulane (Feb. 20, 2021). Sophomore setter Annie Cooke led the way with 50 kills for her second straight 50-assist effort.
Â
Seniror outside hitter Kennedy Warren finished with 15 kills and added five digs, while senior outside hitter Kortlyn Henderson recorded 10 kills with a team-high three blocks.
Â
In the first set, Oregon State held a 15-14 lead before junior outside hitter Rachel Tullos gave the Cougars a 17-15 advantage with three straight kills. After the Beavers rallied to tie the game at 17-17, the Cougars took advantage of another Tullos and two Beaver miscues to build a lead it wound never relinquish.
Â
In Set 2, both teams went back and forth with neither squad holding more than a 3-point lead at any time. The Beavers took a 23-22 lead on a kill from Vivian Light, but senior middle blocker Isabel Theut and Warren responded with back-to-back kills, and Henderson ended the set with another kill to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
Â
Oregon State rallied to win the final three points on a Houston service error and kills from Izzi Szulczewski and Vivian Light in Set 3 to avoid the sweep.
Â
Georgiades and Jackson led the way for the Cougars in Set 4. With Oregon State leading 11-10, Jackson pounded three kills and Georgiades added a pair of service aces to give the Cougars the lead for good.
Â
Oregon State rallied and moved to within a point on three occasions, but the Cougars had an answer each time
Â
Lindsey Schell and Emily Bourne posted 10 kills apiece to lead the Beavers, who fell to 1-1. Szulczewski topped Oregon State with 36 assists, while Grace Massey finished with 10 digs.
