University of Houston freshman Delaney Martin used a strong finish to post a career-low 67 and leads the Women's Golf program during the Final Round of The Bruzzy at Lantana Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
The Boerne, Texas, native began play on a tough note, making bogey on the par-4 sixth hole. Fortunately, that would be her one and only bogey for the day on the 6,241-yard, par-72 course.
After five straight pars, Martin returned to even par with a birdie on the par-4 12th hole and moved into red numbers for the rest of the tournament with a birdie on the par-3 15th hole.
Following three straight pars, Martin drained four straight birdies on Nos. 1-4 and capped the tournament with a par to earn her second Top-10 finish of the season. She tied for seventh at the Texas State Invitational on Feb. 8-9.
Martin wasn't the only Cougar newcomer to appear in the Top 10. Fellow freshman Zoe Slaughter posted a 2-under 70 Monday and tied for ninth at 1-under 215.
Like Martin, Slaughter began play on a tough note with bogeys on her first two holes at Nos. 5-6. Following five pars, the Houston native drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 12-13 and added another birdie on the par-4 17th hole.
Slaughter added two birdies in a 3-hole stretch at No. and No. 3 for her second straight Top-10 showing. The Memorial High School product finished second at the MountainView Collegiate on March 19-21.
As team, the Cougars finished fifth with a 54-hole score of 871. No. 7 Oklahoma State captured the team title at 849 to finish 13 shots ahead of No. 30 Texas Tech. No. 38 North Texas (865) and No. 33 Oklahoma (870) finished 3-4 with San Diego State (872), No. 29 Iowa State (874), Missouri (881), UTSA (883) and No. 42 TCU (884) rounding out the Top 10.
Senior Ariana Saenz and junior Maria Jose Martinez tied for 34th at 221, while freshman Anne Norman finished 73rd at 233. Playing as an individual, junior Annie Kim tied for 47th at 225.
Oklahoma State's Lianna Bailey earned medalist honors at 11-under 205. She finished eight strokes ahead of Audrey Tan (North Texas), Nataliya Guseva (Miami (Fla.)) and Sara Kjellker (San Diego State).
