Tullos' 5 blocks in the 5th set helps thwart Shockers
WICHITA, Kan. – A blocking clinic in the fifth set by junior Rachel Tullos helped the Houston volleyball team escape Wichita State with a 5-set win on Friday night (27-29, 27-25, 25-18, 17-25, 15-13).
With the win, Houston (20-5, 10-3 AAC) has posted the most wins in a season since 2008 and has posted its third-straight season with at least 10 conference wins.
Junior Abbie Jackson posted another double-digit kill night with 18 kills and junior Rachel Tullos added seven blocks, five of which she collected in the fifth set. Sophomore Kate Georgiades had 39 digs, the second-most of her career. Tullos and Georgiades led the match in their respective stats.
In a back-and-forth first set, neither team led by more than two points and Houston's 3-0 run was the longest run until the final 3-0 run that the Shockers went on to take the set 29-27. Houston out-hit Wichita State in the set, .214-.120 and had seven-fewer attack errors but ultimately fell.
The Cougars utilized a 7-0 run to take a 19-17 lead in the second set which helped make up for a five-point deficit. UH held on to win the set 27-25 thanks to eight kills in the set by Jackson.
Houston started slowly in the third set, but another long run, this time a 5-0 run, helped the Cougars pull away 25-18 in the frame. Senior Kennedy Warren had three kills in the set.
Wichita State ran away with the fourth set, winning 25-17. The Shockers hit .237 in the set and held the Cougars to a .116 attacking clip.
The fifth set was all about Tullos and then Wichita State's comeback. Her five blocks in Houston's first eight points of the set gave the Cougars a commanding lead, 8-2 at the media timeout. Tullos entered the set with two total blocks and ended the fifth set with seven. Houston led 10-2 in the set but WSU fought back to make it 14-13 before a Shocker service error ended the match.
