Victory marks 4th consecutive sweep, extends win streak to 7
HOUSTON − The Houston volleyball team recorded its fourth consecutive sweep and its 12th of the season with a 3-0 victory on the road at Memphis on Friday night (25-21, 25-22, 25-20).Â
The victory marked the Cougars' longest winning streak of the season with seven straight. The Cougars also posted their 24th victory of the season, marking the eighth time a team has reached 24+ wins in a season in NCAA program history and the first time since 1996.
The Cougars were diverse on the attack with six players finishing with five or more kills on the night. Junior outside hitter Abbie Jackson and junior middle blocker Rachel Tullos finished the match tied at 10 kills each out of the team's 48 total kills. Sophomore setter Annie Cooke finished the game with a team-high 38 assists out of the team's 47 total, while sophomore libero Kate Georgiades recorded a team-high 15 digs out of the team's 48 digs.
The first set was tightly contested as both teams exchanged kills on the attack and combined for eight ties and three lead changes. After tied at 11-11, the Cougars sparked some momentum offensively to grab the largest lead of the set at 22-18. A late push by Memphis fell short as UH finished the first set 25-21 to lead one set to none. A .529 kill percentage and 18 kills led the way for the Cougars up one set to none heading into the second set.
The second set saw a competitive start much like the first set as neither team could string together a run longer than three points. After leading 13-11, the Cougars rode an 8-3 run to pull away and extend the lead to 20-14. A late 8-4 run by the Tigers kept the set on its heels, but a comeback came up short as junior outside hitter Celeste Darling closed out the second set with a kill to give UH a 2-0 set lead. The Cougars posted a .359 kill percentage in the second set and finished with 14 kills.
In the third set, another close start kept both teams moving on both sides of the ball at 10-10. The Cougars caught momentum and jumped on a 9-2 run to lead 19-12, the largest lead at any point in the game. The Tigers fought back and cut the lead to 21-19 to force a timeout before the Cougars closed out the set 25-20. The Cougars finished the third set with a .372 kill percentage and 16 kills.Â
