Day One of Phill Hansel Invitational Concludes

Cougars find success in first day of competition
HOUSTON – Houston Swimming & Diving wrapped up the first day of the fifth annual Phill Hansel Invitational Thursday at the CRWC Natatorium.
The Cougars completed the first day of the meet seeing many season-best time performances. Houston competed in the 500 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard IM and 50 Yard Freestyle in preliminary competition with the addition of the 200 Yard Relay and 400 Yard Relay in finals.
Houston's 200 Relay of Mary Catherine Jurica, Rachel Hicks, Katie Power, and Emma Wright finished the day in third with a time of 1:31.66. Jurica found herself on the leaderboard again in the 500 Free with a second-place finish and time of 4:48.10. Close behind her in fourth place was Laura Garcia Marin with a final time of 4:51.37.
Sophomore Marina Ortega wrapped up the 200 IM in the third-place spot with 2:00.06. Houston also saw success in the 400 Medley Relay with the team of Marta Beesmans, Henriette Fangli, Adelaide Meuter, and Mary Catherine Jurica placing third with 3:42:32.
All six of Houston's competing divers qualified for finals with the first three places held by Cougars. Chase Farris finished the 1-Meter in first place with a final score of 291.60. She was followed by Katie Deininger in second and Hedda Grelz in third. Houston's Emilia Water was close behind in fifth with Jolie Blodgett in sixth and Josie Graves in seventh.
The diving competition will continue tomorrow with the 3-Meter dive and platform dive on Saturday.
In addition to the weekend's events, Houston Swimming & Diving will also be collecting donations at the CRWC Natatorium for Star of Hope. Suggested donations include, but are not limited to, stationary, jackets and coats, and toiletries.
The Phill Hansel Invitational will conclude the swimming & diving fall schedule.
ABOUT PHILL HANSEL
From 1975-1996, Hansel was the most influential man for the Houston's swimming & diving team. He guided the Cougars to more than 70 dual-meet victories and 10 Top-20 finishes at the AIAW and NCAA Championships.
In 1996, Hansel finished the season with over 39 years of coaching experience and was recognized as one of the most successful collegiate swim coaches in the nation. He was inducted into the Hall of Honor in 2008 with an annual swimming & diving meet created in his name beginning in 2016.
Houston has seen much success at the Phill Hansel Invitational coming out on top with first place finishes in the last four invitationals.
HOW TO WATCH
