Houston Finds Success on Day Two of Phill Hansel

Cougars set records and an NCAA B cut on Friday
HOUSTON – Houston Swimming & Diving completed the second day of the fifth annual Phill Hansel Invitational Friday at the CRWC Natatorium. The Cougars saw improvement from the first day of competition seeing much success in both the preliminary and final events.
"Allan [McCallum] and I are very pleased with how we raced this evening," stated Head Coach Tanica Jamison. "Started the morning just a bit off, but as the morning session progressed, we were getting better and better."
Houston saw record-breaking times with personal bests, an NCAA B cut, and a school record-setting time throughout the day's events and races.
When asked about the individual success, Jamison stated, "Tonight, both in the pool and on the boards, we had a number of lifetime best times. Mai [Ortega] achieved our first NCAA B cut this season in the 400 IM, Adelaide [Meuter] swam our second fastest 100 butterfly in school history, and we had a number of individual swims that finished in the top 10 performances in school history."
Ortega saw a 400 IM finals time of 4:17.26 and third-place finish. She was followed closely by Laura Garcia Marin in fourth with 4:19.55. Both swimmers improved on their times in finals from the preliminary 400 IM race earlier in the day. Meuter completed the 100 Fly with a final time of 54:79 seeing 54:10 in the preliminary race.
Mary Catherine Jurica found herself on the leaderboard once again in the second day of competition with a fifth-place finish in the 200 Freestyle while Henrietta Fangli placed fourth in the 100 Breaststroke. Multiple Cougars found themselves in the top 10 following the conclusion of the 100 Backstroke. Katie Power was the highest-placing Houston swimmer with a fourth-place 54:90. She was followed closely by Julia Koluch in seventh and Marta Beesmans in eighth.
Friday's finals competition included two relays beginning with the 200 Medley and concluding with the 800 Freestyle. Houston's A relay team of Power, Fangli, Meuter, and Emma Wright found themselves in the fourth-place spot finishing the 200 Medley with a time of 1:41.70. Ending day on a high note, the 800 Freestyle Relay team of Jurica, Keely Rollinson, Rachel Hicks, and Emma Wright who placed fourth with 7:21.48.
Houston's divers competed in the 3-Meter Dive with Katie Deininger topping the leaderboard with a 353.10 combined dive score to end the second day of competition. Chase Farris followed Deininger in second scoring 336.40. Both divers improved on their preliminary scores from earlier in the day.
In addition to Deininger and Farris holding the top two spots, Jolie Blodgett took fourth while Emilia Water was in sixth place and Josie Graves in seventh.
The diving competition will continue tomorrow with platform prelims at Noon and finals beginning around 3 p.m.
"Tomorrow will be the true test for all teams, but it is also our best day collectively, so we are looking forward to finishing the meet strong. We hope everyone comes out to support the team and help support the Star of Hope with their generous donations," said Jamison.
In addition to the weekend's events, Houston Swimming & Diving will also be collecting donations at the CRWC Natatorium for Star of Hope. Suggested donations include, but are not limited to, stationary, jackets and coats, and toiletries. Saturday will be the last day to drop off donations.
The Phill Hansel Invitational will conclude the swimming & diving fall schedule.
ABOUT PHILL HANSEL
From 1975-1996, Hansel was the most influential man for the Houston's swimming & diving team. He guided the Cougars to more than 70 dual-meet victories and 10 Top-20 finishes at the AIAW and NCAA Championships.
In 1996, Hansel finished the season with over 39 years of coaching experience and was recognized as one of the most successful collegiate swim coaches in the nation. He was inducted into the Hall of Honor in 2008 with an annual swimming & diving meet created in his name beginning in 2016.
Houston has seen much success at the Phill Hansel Invitational coming out on top with first place finishes in the last four invitationals.
