Houston Holds #Fight4Molly Match; Hosts SMU, Memphis

Cougars host cancer awareness night Friday as assistant coach Gerwig's wife battles cancer
HOUSTON – The University of Houston volleyball team has won five straight matches and six of its last seven matches as it begins a two match homestand atop the American Athletic Conference standings. The Cougars will play host to SMU on Friday at 7 p.m. CST and Memphis on Sunday at 1 p.m. CST – Friday's match is the program's Fight 4 Molly match where the program will honor assistant coach Brian Gerwig and his wife Molly, who lost her battle with cancer Friday morning.
The Cougars (15-3, 5-1 American) enter Friday's match against SMU atop the league standings after topping previous unbeaten UCF in five sets in Orlando Oct. 8 and dropping USF in four sets Oct. 10.
A pair of Houston student-athletes were honored by the conference on Monday. Sophomore Kate Georgiades was named Defensive Player of the Week after averaging 5.22 digs per set over the two matches and added an ace on the weekend.
Georgiades racked in 47 digs and helped hold South Florida to a .030 attacking percentage, a season-best mark for the Cougars defense.
The libero has led the Coogs in digs for the 18th-straight match and ranks 15th in the nation in digs per set (5.27), which leads the American Athletic Conference.
Junior Abbie Jackson leads Houston in the offensive side and earned Honor Roll recognition after a 4.00 kills/set and 5.02 points/set weekend. Jackson is coming off a weekend of 36 total kills over the pair of matches.
The Cougars lead the conference in aces so far this year, with 1.93 per set, which ranks 18th nationally. UH also has held its opponents to the lowest hitting percentage in the league, allowing just a .175 attacking percentage through 18 matches this year.
The University of Houston fall sports also lead the American Athletic Conference in total wins and winning percentage in 2021. UH has 29 total wins among football, volleyball and women's soccer.
