Houston Widens Its Lead on Third Day of Championships

Cougars sweep 200 Freestyle as Cougars maintain lead
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team continued to shatter records in its home pool on the third day of the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championships.
DAY 3- RESULTS
Houston widened its lead on the third day of The American Championships, taking home titles in the 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back and 400 Medley Relay. UH closed out the day with 644.5 points, followed by SMU in second-place with 438.5 points and Cincinnati with 362 points.
In the opening event of the day, Audrey McKinnon advanced to the B-Final with a time of 4:23.57, closing out the day with a 15th-place finish at 4:26.21.
Katie Higgins had a stellar day in the 100 Fly, shattering the program record in the prelims at 53.67 to advance to the A-Final along with Isabel Tank with a swim of 54.89. In the final, Higgins took third-place at 53.77, followed by Tank who finished sixth with a time of 54.97.
The 200 Freestyle A-Final was filled with Cougar red as five UH swimmers advanced. Zarena Brown would claim the title in the event, shattering the program record at 1:44.33, followed by Mykenzie Leehy in second-place at 1:45.59. Samantha Medlin completed the sweep for Houston, finishing in third-place at 1:47.34. Freshman Elizabeth Richardson has her second stellar swim of the day to finish fifth at 1:48.94 as Rachel Hicks touched in at 1:49.88 for sixth-place.
Peyton Kondis reclaimed the 100 Breaststroke title after advancing to the A-Final alongside Angeliki Mavrantza. Kondis led the field at 59.34 to reclaim the title in the event as Mavrantza took bronze at 1:00.52. Kaley Hoffman won the B-Final with a time of 1:03.66.
The Cougars closed out the final individual swimming event of the day with two more podium finishes as Laura Laderoute and Ioanna Sacha earned first and third-place in the 100 Back. After setting a meet record earlier in the day at 52.61, Laderoute took first-place in the event with a time of 52.75. Sacha earned bronze at 54.13 as Katie Power finished sixth at 54.44. Kaley Hoffman won the B-Final with a time of 55.35.
The Cougars 400 Medley Relay dominated in the final event of the day as Laderoute, Higgins, Kondis and Brown combined for a program-best 3:34.13 in the event to take the title for the second time in as many years.
The final day of Championships action will resume on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center.
