Cougars post season-high .317 hitting percentage
HOUSTON – Behind a season-high hitting percentage of .317, the University of Houston Volleyball team swept (25-19, 25-20, 25-23) Wichita State on Sunday afternoon inside the Fertitta Center.
This marks the first time the Cougars (15-12, 9-3 American) have hit above .300 against a conference foe since Houston posted a .364 clip on Nov. 10, 2017 against USF. Of those with 10 or more attacks on the day, Houston had four players surpass the .275 plateau, which was led by sophomore Isabel Theut's .583 clip.
With a .533 hitting percentage, freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos posted a career-high 10 kills against the Shockers (7-17, 4-8 American), while senior outside hitter Megan Duncan's .276 hitting mark paced her to a match-high 12 kills. Sophomore right side hitter Kendall Haywood finished the afternoon hitting .316.
Commanding the offense was sophomore setter Kelsey Childers, who tallied a career-high for the second match in a row with her 36 assists. Defensively, senior libero Katie Karbo held down the back row, recording a match-high 19 digs.
Sunday's win is Houston's fourth win in a row over Wichita State, having now won six consecutive sets against the Shockers. Houston's nine conference wins is also the most since 2015.
Houston 3, Wichita State 0
Set 1
The Cougars got going quickly after a pair of overpass kills from Tullos put Houston ahead by four early. Once the Shockers closed the gap to a score, Childers dumped the ball over the net to give Houston the 9-7 advantage. As the two teams continued to trade runs, the Cougars went out in front 18-16 courtesy of a kill from Theut that forced a timeout from Wichita State. The break in action wasn't enough to stop Houston's momentum, as a thundering kill from Duncan capped off a 7-3 run the Cougars used to close out the set and win the opening frame 25-19.
Set 2
With the second stanza beginning in a tightly contested battle, the Cougars began to pull away and went up 10-6 thanks to an incredible defensive effort from freshman defensive specialist Karly Berkland that saved the and resulted in a point for Houston. Wichita State responded though, as 4-1 run from the Shockers brought the score to 11-10, but the run never rattled Houston, who maintained its edge. After a kill from Duncan gave the Cougars a 19-16 lead, Houston never looked back from that point, going on to win the set 25-20 to take a commanding 2-0 lead over Wichita State at intermission.
Set 3
Houston's offense continued to make noise in the third, as a kill from Tullos gave the Cougars a quick 6-1 advantage. After the Shockers clawed their way back into it and took their first lead of the set, Houston immediately responded and tied the score at 15 off a kill from Haywood. From there, both sides continued to trade leads until Houston went ahead at 21-20. The Cougars maintained their edge all the way down to the wire as a kill from Karsten cemented the 25-23 set victory and 3-0 sweep for Houston.
