- In its season openers, Houston is 32-12 all-time dating back to 1974 (nor results available prior to that year) and 4-2 under Head Coach Kaddie Platt. Now in her seventh season with the Cougars, Platt has won four of her past five season openers with Houston and in 16-7 all-time in season-opening matches throughout her career.
- 2017 saw the Cougars emerge as the best serving in The American, tallying a conference-high 1.55 aces per set, which also ranked No. 29 in the country. Houston showed its strength at the service line against ECU last year, when the Cougars notched The American single-match record 15 aces against the Pirates.
- Houston's rotation will see some familiar faces from its 2017 season as junior outside hitter Megan Duncan (2.68 kills last season) and junior libero Katie Karbo are both primed for stellar seasons. In 2017, Karbo's 5.29 digs per set was amongst the best in the conference, finishing second in that category.
- The Cougars will also look to show off its young talent this weekend as five freshmen will sport the Scarlet and White for the first time in their careers.
