NEW YORK – The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team took to The Big Apple and came away with an 83-72 win over Columbia on Wednesday inside Levien Gymnasium in New York, N.Y.
Houston came out firing, connecting on a pair of three pointers by Angela Harris and Serithia Hawkins to build an early 6-0 lead. After a Columbia bucket, the Cougars picked up another basket by Hawkins and a layin from Alyssa Okoene to build a 10-2 lead heading to the first media timeout.
Houston pushed the lead to 13 after five straight points from Okoene and a free throw from Myyah West, but Columbia would respond with a 14-6 spurt to close the gap in the contest. A layup from Lilian Kennedy sparked the run, and after an Octavia Barnes layup, the Lions scored 12 of the final 16 points in the quarter, capped by back-to-back triples from Mikayla Markham and Sienna Durr to cut the lead to 22-16 after the first quarter.
Columbia entered the game 16th in the nation and first in the Ivy League in turnovers per game at 12.0, however the Cougars forced the Lions to turn it over seven times in the first quarter, leading to 11 points off turnovers.
Houston opened the second quarter with a basket from Julia Blackshell-Fair, and the teams would trade baskets over the middle of the period, led by a pair of buckets from Dorian Branch for Houston. Columbia would continue to close the gap however, using a 10-6 run to cut the lead to two at 30-28 with 3:58 remaining in the half.
Columbia pulled even on its next possession and took its first lead of the game two possessions later, when Markham landed a fast-break layup. Houston tied the game on the next possession, and after a 3-pointer from Madison Pack regained the lead for Columbia, the Cougars closed the half with four straight points from Tatyana Hill to take a 38-37 lead into the intermission.
Houston shot 48.5 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes and outrebounded Columbia 21-14, including an 8-5 advantage on the offensive end. Houston forced Columbia to turn the ball over 13 times in the first half.
The two teams traded buckets early in the fourth quarter, with the Cougars picking up scores from Branch, Okoene, and Jasmyne Harris. However, falling a 3-pointer from Hawkins, which gave Houston a 48-42 lead, Columbia responded with eight-straight points, all of which came from Madison Hardy, to give the Lions a 50-48 lead at the under-5 media timeout.
Houston caught a spark out of the timeout and carried it through the remainder of the quarter. Angela Harris started a 6-0 run with a free throw before Branch added two more and Hawkins buried a 3-pointer to give Houston a 54-50 lead. After Columbia cut the lead back to two, the Cougars closed the quarter with nine of the final 12 points, including six from Tatyana Hill to build a 63-55 lead after three.
The Cougars kept the momentum going heading to the fourth quarter, opening the period on a 6-0 run after a layup from Jasmyne Harris and back-to-back buckets from Dymond Gladney to force a Columbia timeout. The Cougars would add three more on a triple from Jasmyne Harris before Columbia would find the scoreboard for the first time in the quarter, and Houston had built a 72-58 lead.
Columbia made one final push over the final five minutes, using an 8-4 run to cut the lead to 78-66 with just two minutes to play in the contest. Columbia would pull even closer with another 3-pointer, this one from Riley Casey to cut the lead to 10 at 79-69, however it proved to be too-little, too-late as the Cougars made a bucket and a pair free throws down the stretch and took the game 83-72.
