Cougars Drop Matchup Against SMU

Jasmyne Harris led the Cougars with 16 points.
Harris helped the Cougars to a strong start in the first, finishing the quarter 3-of-5 from the field including 2-of-3 from downtown for eight points. Houston trailed early in the quarter, but junior Brianne Coffman sparked a 10-2 run with a jumper in the paint that put Houston on top 15-12 after 10 minutes.
The defenses clamped down in the second quarter with each team combining to score just 22 points in the frame. The teams traded buckets the majority of the quarter, but the Mustangs built a four-point lead with just 1:21 remaining. However, freshman Angela Harris drilled a 3-pointer late in the frame to cut the lead to the halftime score of 28-27.
Houston struggled to find any rhythm in the second half and scored just 18 points over the final 20 minutes. A pair of bright spots emerged for the Cougars over the last two quarters with Jasmyne Harris and senior Jacqueline Blake combining to score 13 of the final 18 points.

TURNING POINT
Houston shot just 24.0 percent from the field in the second half and made just one 3-pointer after finishing the first half 5-14 from beyond the arc.
TOP PERFORMERS
Houston: Jasmyne Harris led the Cougars with 16 points while matching a career-high with five assists. Blake finished the contest with 11 points and added a team-high seven rebounds.
SMU: Alicia Froling paced the Mustangs on offense and on the glass, finishing with a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. McKenzie Adams also had a big night scoring for SMU, finishing the contest with 17 points.
NEWS AND NOTES
- For the 16th time this season, the Cougars won the battle in bench points. Houston's reserves outscored SMU's bench 32-10.
UP NEXT FOR THE COUGARS
Houston heads back on the road for a pair of American Athletic Conference matchups. On Wednesday, Jan. 25 Houston makes its way to Memphis, Tenn., to battle the Memphis Tigers, before traveling to play No. 1/1 UConn on Saturday, Jan. 28 in Hartford, Conn.
