Houston Drops Road Matchup at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team fell 82-56 against Tulane, in New Orleans on Saturday. Freshman guard Angela Harris led the Cougars with 15 points.
Houston struggled to find a rhythm to open the game and shot just 3-of-20 from the field in the first quarter. Making her first start as a Cougar, junior Brianne Coffman pulled down four rebounds and scored four points in the first frame, but Tulane raced out to a 17-7 lead at the end of the quarter.
Six different Cougars scored a bucket in the second quarter for Houston, as the Cougars improved their field-goal percentage to 42.9 percent before the break. Harris, and juniors Mariah Mitchell and Dionna Collins each connected on three-pointers in the frame, but eight Houston turnovers allowed Tulane to extend the lead to 37-22 at the half.
Harris was the bright spot for the Cougars in the contest, scoring 12 of her 15 points in the second half. The Cypress, Texas, native finished 4-of-9 from beyond the 3-point line, while pulling down two rebounds and assisting on a bucket.

TURNING POINT
With the Cougars trailing by 12 late in the second quarter, Collins drilled a 3-pointer for her first-career basket with Houston. From there, the Coogs would go on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to four at 24-20. However, the Green Wave would answer with an 11-0 run of their own to put the game out of reach.
TOP PERFORMERS
Houston: Houston's top performer on offense was Harris, who finished with 15 points, while junior Chyanne Butler added nine and Jasmyne Harris scored eight. On the glass, Coffman pulled down a career-high nine rebounds.
Tulane: The Green Wave finished with three players in double-figures including a game-high 22 from Kolby Morgan. Leslie Vorpahl added 13 points, while Courtnie Latham finished with 12. On the glass, Tene Thompson paced Tulane with nine boards.
NEWS AND NOTES
- For the 14th time this season, the Cougars won the battle in bench points. Houston's reserves outscored Tulane's bench 34-26.
UP NEXT FOR THE COUGARS
Houston begins a 2-game homestand when they welcome Temple to town on Jan. 18. Tipoff against the Owls is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Cougars will follow that with a 2 p.m., tipoff against in-state rival SMU on Jan 21. The matchup against the Mustangs will air on the American Digital Network.
