EUGENE, Ore. â€" University of Houston sophomore Michael Perras posted an even-par 70 during Saturday's NCAA Championships to help move the Cougars higher in the standings at Eugene Country Club.
As a team, the Cougars bettered their First-Round score by nine strokes at 287 and rose five places to 24th with a 36-hole score of 583 on the 7,014-yard, par-70 course.
Houston started its Second Round on a high note, sinking eight birdies on the way to playing the front nine at a combined 1-under-par as a team.
However, the back nine proved to be a challenge as it did for most teams throughout the day. The Cougars managed only four birdies as a team over the final nine holes, playing to a combined 13-over-par.
After posting a First-Round 75 on Friday, Perras used a steady effort in Saturday's round to post the Cougars' low round of the tournament to date. The Deer Park, Texas, native started his day with five straight pars before battling a bogey on the 442-yard, par-4 sixth hole.
Fortunately, Perras â€" who was a 2016 All-American Athletic Conference Team selection, responded with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7-8. He endured one more bogey on the 10th hole to start his back nine but capped his day with eight consecutive pars to move into a tie for 64th at 145.
Seniors Blair Hamilton and Vincent Martino each fired 1-over-par 71s on Saturday and joined Perras in a tie for 64th at 145. Martino enjoyed three birdies in his round, including two on the front nine, while Hamilton added a pair of birdies with one on the 18th hole to cap his day.
Junior Matt Scobie and sophomore Papito Gonzalez each recorded 75s Saturday and were tied for 109th at 149.
Individually, USC's Justin Suh held the lead at 5-under-par 135 with Alabama's Robby Shelton and Nahum Mendoza III tied for second at 136.
No. 8 Vanderbilt moved into the team lead with a score of 563 to stand two strokes in front of No. 3 USC. No. 21 Arkansas (566), No. 20 Oregon (568), No. 12 LSU (568), No. 17 Alabama (569), No. 2 Texas (570) and No. 4 Illinois (570) rounded out the top-8 leaders.
No. 7 Arizona State (571), No. 11 California (571), No. 19 South Carolina (572), No. 50 Louisville (573), No. 16 Florida (573), No. 5 Oklahoma State (574), No. 9 Auburn (575), No. 6 Georgia (575), No. 10 Clemson (575) and No. 22 San Diego State (575) each stood among the top-15 leaders following Saturday's play.
Following the completion of Sunday's Third Round, the top 15 teams and the top nine individuals not on a qualifying team will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determined the top-8 teams for match-play competition and the NCAA individual national champion.
With the completion of Saturday's play, the top nine individuals not on a currently qualifying team stood at +2 or better.
