EUGENE, Ore. â€" For the second straight day, the University of Houston Men's Golf program lowered its team score, but it would not be quite enough as the Cougars fell just short of finishing among the top-15 leaders during the NCAA Championships Third Round and advancing.
Competing on the 7,014-yard, par-72 course at Eugene Country Club, the Cougars posted a score of 5-over-par 285 and finished the 54-hole tournament at 868 to tie with No. 13 Florida State and No. 9 Auburn for 19th.
Houston fell one stroke shy of tying with No. 50 Louisville, No. 18 Oklahoma, No. 44 TCU, No. 10 Clemson and No. 6 Georgia for 14th. Louisville and Oklahoma advanced to Monday's Fourth Round based on the cumulative total of non-counting scores over the first three rounds.
After playing the front nine at 4-over-par as a team, the Cougars confronted the back nine which proved to be a challenge for most teams all week. Houston appeared to be buried deep in the team standings through the first half of their back nine, playing at a combined 8-over-par through the first five holes.
However, the Cougars proved to be a resilient bunch and went on a scoring spree that put them back into contention for the top-15 leaders.
Over their final four holes as a team, Houston seven birdies and added an eagle from senior Blair Hamilton on the 548-yard, par-5 15th hole to challenge for the final team spot.
Making his NCAA Championships debut, junior Matt Scobie led the way for the Cougars with three birdies on his final four holes and finished Sunday with a 2-under-par 68 for Houston's low round of the tournament. With his stellar play, the Ajax, Ontario, native moved into a tie for 62nd at 217.
Hamilton struggled early with two bogeys and a double bogey through his first seven holes Sunday. Playing in the final collegiate tournament of his career, he rallied with three birdies and an eagle and only one bogey over his final 11 holes to lead the Cougars at 215 to tie for 36th.
Sophomore Michael Perras tied for 67th with a score of 218, while senior Vincent Martino tied for 75th at 219. Sophomore Papito Gonzalez tied for 112th at 223.
Vanderbilt continued to lead the team standings at 845 and finished Sunday two strokes in front of No. 2 Texas. No. 3 USC (850), No. 12 LSU (851), No. 20 Oregon (852), No. 21 Arkansas (855), No. 7 Arizona State (857), No. 11 California (858), No. 5 Oklahoma State (859), No. 4 Illinois (859), No. 28 Kentucky (863), No. 19 South Carolina (865), No. 16 Florida (867), No. 50 Louisville (867) and No. 18 Oklahoma (867) rounded out the top-15 leaders and advanced to Monday's Fourth Round.
Sixth-ranked Aaron Wise of Oregon moved into the individual lead at 6-under-par 204 after shooting a 64 in Sunday's round. Matthias Schwab of Vanderbilt stood in second at 206 with Texas' Beau Hossler in third at 207.
The individual leader after Monday's final round of stroke play will be crowned the NCAA individual national champion. The top-8 teams after Monday's round advance to the match play with the NCAA team national crown being crowned Wednesday.

LINEUP in NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
