Clutch Shooting Propels Cougars to 64-55 Win over UCF

HOUSTON â€" Senior forward Marche' Amerson scored a career-high 20 points including 4-of-7 from behind the 3-point line to help lead the Houston Cougar women's basketball team to a 64-55 victory inside Hofheinz Pavilion on Wednesday.
"The first thing that I want to say is, that through this rough stretch we have a team that is really resilient and came to work every day," Head Coach Ronald Hughey said. "They brought energy and effort, they brought the faith and the determination, and that is all because of all of our fans and everybody here at the University of Houston that supports us. We feel that energy and that is the thing that pulled us through. It will continue to push us through. Again, we wanted to come out and have an opportunity just to fight for 40 minutes, take care of the basketball, score, and play relaxed and aggressive. I'm just so happy to get an opportunity to get a win."
The two teams traded buckets for a majority of the first two quarters with neither team holding a lead of more than three points for the first 13 minutes of the game. However, with the Knights leading 17-16 with 7:34 remaining in the first half, UCF would go on an 8-1 run to extend their lead to eight. But, the Cougars would answer with a mini 4-0 run of their own to end the half and enter the locker room down 25-21.
Houston continued to battle late in the game, but could not find a way to reclaim the lead in the third quarter. The Cougars cut the lead to a one-possession game five times during the third frame, but were unable to capitalize until Amerson drilled a three with just 1:32 remaining in the period to put Houston back on top 40-39.
