HEAD COACH Ronald Hughey
On the team making adjustments the last two games
"We've been waiting on Jasmyne (Harris), she has shown flashes in practice, and we've been waiting on it like crazy. The thing that surprised me with her before today is Jasmyne was shooting 12 percent from three. It's all been because she's rushing. She's rushing and taking the shots she's not supposed to take.
We've had a chance to sit down with the film. They've got iPads now, so we're able to send them clips so they can look at them, evaluate and go through those kinds of things. That's what we did. We showed her all of the good shots she made and all of bad shots she's taken. On top of that, she's got to be more aggressive to get to the free-throw line and focus on making more free-throws. She had this go-behind-the-back routine (and she would) spin the ball, and we got rid of all of that. Come up, take a deep breath, bounce it however many times you want to, blow it out and shoot the basketball. That's what we did with her.
It's starting to happen like that with each and every one of them. Chyanne (Butler) was averaging two turnovers in the first quarter. I don't think she had one in the first quarter of this game because she only had one turnover the entire game. It's just the process of getting them to understand the different things they're not doing on a consistent basis versus what they are doing on a consistent basis.
We're just breaking it down in film. We're doing a lot of film: 20 minutes before practice, sometimes 20 minutes after practice. Even on days off we're sending them clips, and they have the opportunity to look at those on their own time.
We've had the opportunity to get game-plan iPads from Cougar Pride and a bunch of people who have helped us with that, and it's been tremendous for the program. I can't thank them enough."
On shooting
"Just adding more to practice. We thought we had enough in when we were shooting in the beginning, middle and end so we broke it down into segments. They have 200 free throws they have to make outside of the office on their time so we are getting a little more accountability on that end. We talk about being above the line and being below the line. Above the line is caring about something so much that you do what you are supposed to do. Below the line, you will take a short cut. You will only give 50 instead of 100 or I will put off and do this tomorrow morning even though I know I have three hours tonight. Above the line and below the line, they are starting to slide above the line a little bit more on everything.
On urgency today
"Extremely proud. Teams have been jumping out on us. College of Charleston is outscoring people 10 and 12 points in the first quarter. The third quarter was their drop off so we knew we had to come out and punch them as well as they were going to punch us and it started with transition."
On backcourt
"We can pressure and get up in the backcourt, but in the front court we are still allowing people to get lay ups. We open up the gate a little bit and are allowing them to get lay ups and against good teams we can't do that. You will end up in four trouble and have to earn every single point on your end where they are not allowing us to get lay ups.
We are really getting better in that matter and also being able to create more depth. We are including Quatera Limbrick and all of those kids who are coming along and I'm telling them to continue to trust the process. After a while I will be able to look down the bench and be able to put any of our girls in. That is what we are trying to develop now through the rigorous grinding with practice and being able to grind out some of these games like this."
