HOUSTON HEAD COACH Ronald Hughey
Opening Statement
"First of all, I'd just like to say that I'm really, really proud of our team today: The perseverance, the fight and the intensity that we displayed. To dig a hole like that and then come back is just unbelievable. It's just a credit to who we are and that we're focused and ready to play. I'm just delighted to coach a team like that. They could have easily just folded it up and went inside and not competed but that's not who we are. That's not the culture of our program. When we talk about chasing greatness, that's it. That's the epitome of what that is."
On message to the team after first quarter
"The message was OK we took the first punch now let's give them ours. We had a better halftime message then we did in the second quarter. We really just wanted to just tailor ourselves. Temple came out more aggressive in the passing lanes and disrupting things we wanted to do. We just need to get ourselves refocused because playing a team like that, that's a NCAA team. They went to the semifinals of the WNIT. They've really come a long way in their program. We really wanted to just come out and compete and to be able to stay around and have the opportunity to win it at the end."
On upcoming Memphis game
"Memphis is a team that's going to play multiple defenses. The thing about Memphis is that they have a young lady on their team named [Ariel] Hearn that can really score the basketball. She's an almost 2000 point scorer. They have a post player, Breigha [Wilder-Cochran], who can score around the basket. They're a streaky team. They went to Temple and lost by 20. They beat Wisconsin by 30."
On focusing on Memphis instead of UConn
"I don't even think [the players] knew we had UConn coming up until you just said it. We have a football mentality. One game a week. 1-0 every week. So we're just focusing on Memphis now. We'll deal with UConn after Tuesday."
SOPHOMORE GUARD Chyanne Butler
On her play in the second half
"I started out slow but my team was there for me and they always have my back. It wasn't me. It was always my teammates, giving me encouragement, telling me I can do it and helping me hit these big shots. I just wanted to help my team."
SOPHOMORE GUARD Mariah Mitchell
On rebounding the ball
"We really worked on that in practice, trying to get boards and second-chance points, so I really felt we took that on as a team trying to get boards."
