PALM CITY, Fla. - University of Houston senior Roman Robledo fired consecutive sub-par rounds to finish the first day of the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at 3-under-par 139 and stand in a tie for seventh place on Monday evening.
Robledo, who was an All-America Second-Team honoree in 2013-14, opened the tournament with a 1-under-par 70 on the 7,076-yard, par-71 course at Floridian Golf Club, thanks to three birdies during a four-hole stretch on the back nine.
In the afternoon session, the Harlingen, Texas, native was solid again on the back nine, draining three birdies in a six-hole span to finish with a team-low 69 and earn his place among the first day's top-10 leaders.
The low scores have been nothing new for Robledo in recent tournaments. In his last nine rounds, he has totaled sub-par scores in eight of those, including each of the last five.
Junior Blair Hamilton opened with a 1-under-par 70 in the morning round as well and was tied for 21st at 143.
Senior Kyle Pilgrim and freshman Michael Perras were tied for 53rd at 151, while sophomore Matt Scobie stood in 73rd at 162. Competing as individuals, freshman Alan De Bondt was tied for 66th at 156, while junior Vincent Martino was tied for 71st at 158.
As a team, the Cougars were tied with No. 5 Georgia Tech for ninth at 584. No. 14 LSU held the first-day lead at 553 to finish one stroke ahead of No. 2 Florida State. No. 7 South Carolina (564), No. 18 USF (568), NO. 10 UCLA (574), No. 19 Oklahoma State (577), Texas A&M (579) and No. 1 Illinois (580) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Individually, Texas A&M's Greg Yates stood atop the leaderboard at 8-under-par 134, thanks to back-to-back 67s. USF's Rigel Fernandes and Illinois' Thomas Detry were tied for second at 136 with Florida State's Hank Lebioda checking in at No. 25.
The tournament features one of the nation's top fields. Nine of the country's top-50 programs are competing at the event, including half of the top 10
