LeCANTO, Fla. - The University of Houston Men's Golf program stood in third place following the first day of the American Athletic Conference Championships on the Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch on Sunday evening.
Competing on the 7,025-yard, par-72 course, the Cougars opened Sunday's morning round with a team score of 5-under-par 283 and finished the first day with a score of 575. No. 18 USF held the first-day lead at 557 with UCF in second at 573.
Following the Cougars, No. 29 SMU (577), Memphis (585), Cincinnati (587), Tulsa (589), East Carolina (594), UConn (597) and Temple (615) rounded out the field.
While the tournament was originally scheduled for 18 holes each day through Tuesday, coaches and American Athletic Conference administrators agreed Saturday morning to play 36 holes Sunday due to the threat of inclement weather later in the week.
Individually, senior All-American Roman Robledo posted a 36-hole score of 2-under-par 142 to stand in a tie for sixth. The Harlingen, Texas, native opened with a 70 on Sunday morning, thanks to seven birdies, and followed with an even-par 72 with three birdies and an eagle.
Freshman Alan De Bondt and senior Kyle Pilgrim were tied for 11th at 143. De Bondt wasn't scheduled to compete for the Cougars but moved into Houston's lineup when junior Blair Hamilton was sidelined with a back injury Sunday morning.
In the morning round, the Antwerp, Belgium, native drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4-5 on the front nine and added two more birdies on the back nine for a 69 and the Cougars' lowest round of the first day.
Pilgrim rallied from a First-Round 73 to post a 2-under-par 70 in the afternoon session. The Colleyville, Texas, native sank a pair of birdies on the front nine and then birdied three of the final five holes to surge into a tie for 11th.
Sophomore Matt Scobie was tied for 25th at 1449 after shooting 71 in the First Round. The Ajax, Ontario, Canada, native drained five birdies with only one bogey over the final 10 holes.
Junior Vincent Martino was tied for 33rd at 151.
USF's Ryan Fricker held the first-day day at 10-under-par 134 after back-to-back 67s. UCF's Linus Vaisanen stood in second at 138 with SMU's Andrew Buchanan and Rigel Fernandes of USF tied for third at 140.
FINAL ROUND on MONDAY

The Cougars start their round at 7:50 a.m. (CDT) off No. 1 with No. 29 SMU. Martino starts the day at 7:50 a.m. (CDT) Monday with Scobie (8 a.m.), Pilgrim (8:10 a.m.), De Bondt (8:20 a.m.) and Robledo (8:30 a.m.) following.

Following the American Athletic Conference Championships, the Cougars will learn their NCAA postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show at 9 a.m. (CDT), May 4, on the Golf Channel.
That also will be the same day as the annual Dave Williams Pro-Am at The Woodlands Country Club. All proceeds from this annual fundraiser benefit Project 17 - the Houston Golf booster club - and the capital campaign for the Dave Williams Golf Academy at Golf Club of Houston.

Six 54-hole tournaments will be held at six NCAA Regional sites on May 14-16. The 2015 NCAA Regional sites are: UNC Finley Golf Course, hosted by North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.; The Farms Golf Club, hosted by San Diego in San Diego.; The Rawls Course, hosted by Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas; Golf Mountain Golf Club, hosted by Washington in Bremerton, Wash.; The Course at Yale, hosted by Yale in New Haven, Conn.; and The Sagamore Club, hosted by Ball State in Noblesville, Ind.
The low five teams and low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
This marks the second straight season in which the Cougars have competed at the American Athletic Conference Championships. A year ago, Houston finished third at this event on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club.
The Cougars boasted three of the top-20 leaders with Robledo leading the way at even-par 213 to tie for fourth. Curtis Reed finished eighth with a score of 215 with Wesley McClain finishing 18th at 220.
CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
The Cougars have enjoyed tremendous success during their conference championships history. Houston has posted 20 team titles with the most recent coming at the 2013 Conference USA Championships in Texarkana, Ark. It was the program's first conference title since 2001.
In addition to the team success, the Cougars can boast of 20 conference medalists during the program's history. Robledo was the most recent individual champion after posting a score of 8-under-par 208 at the 2013 Conference USA Championships. He became the first Cougar to win a conference individual title since Brad McIntosh in 2001.
