Men’s Golf Finishes First Day at NB3 Matchplay

Cougars fall to NC State in morning round, hold 3-2 lead over New Mexico before play suspended
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Men's Golf program completed play during the first day of the NB3 Matchplay at Twin Warriors Golf Club on Tuesday evening.
Fighting through rain and cool temperatures, the Cougars fell to NC State, 3.5-1.5, in the morning round on the 7,632-yard, par-72 course. Houston rebounded in the afternoon session and held a 3-2 lead over New Mexico State before play was suspended due to darkness with all Cougars completing 12 holes.
The Cougars will compete their match against New Mexico State on Wednesday morning before facing New Mexico in their final match of the tournament.
This is the first of two match-play events for the Cougars in the fall. Houston competes at the Big 12 Matchplay in Salt Lake City on Oct. 12-14.
NC STATE 3.5, HOUSTON 1.5
In Tuesday's morning round, NC State took a 3.5-1.5 win over the Cougars.
Junior Hsuan-Yi Chen took a 4&3 win over Pearce Lewin for Houston's first point. After Hsuan-Yi Chen made birdie on the par-4 second hole to take an early lead, the two players halved the next five holes before Chen made another birdie on the par-5 eighth hole for a 2 up lead.
Two holes later, Hsuan-Yi Chen pushed his lead to 3up with a par at No. 10.
Lewin cut the deficit to 2down with a birdie on the par-5 12th hole, but Hsuan-Yi Chen won the next two holes to go 4up and then made par at No. 15 to clinch the match.
After being 3 down through six holes, senior Grant Doggett rallied to tie his match against Hunter Stetson.
Senior Chi Chun Chen fell 7&5 to Xander Goboy while junior Sacha Ruiz dropped a 2&1 decision to John Logan. Sophomore Jayk Altic lost 2&1 to Rylan Shim.
HOUSTON 3, NEW MEXICO STATE 2
Play suspended due to darkness
In the afternoon round, Houston held a 3-2 lead before play was suspended due to darkness through 12 holes.
Senior Sebastian Gamboa won each of his first four holes and held a 5 up lead over Brasen Briones with five holes remaining. Doggett held a 2 up lead over Frank Cabeza through 13.
Ruiz was tied in his match against Max Chan through 12 while Chi Chun Chen was tied against Kostka Horno through 13. Hsuan-Yi Chen was 1 down against Mateo Payán through 14.
