Cougar Comeback Falls Short Against Memphis

"Tonight we played a great Memphis team that is not only athletic but has depth," head coach Chris Pfau said. They were one of the better teams we played this year, and there is a reason they are second in our conference right now."
Freshman forward Selena Peters scored her first career goal, and junior goalkeeper Jordan Brown picked up eight saves, but it was not enough as Houston fell to the Tigers.
"The big difference is that teams like Memphis not only have talent but their depth just wears you down," Pfau said. "Our team fought and did a great job of scoring to make it 2-1, but just ran out of steam toward the end of the game.
Memphis got on the scoreboard late in the first half when Valerie Sanderson scored her 10th goal of the season. Sanderson scored on a shot from Nugene Nugent that deflected off of Brown and trickled behind her.
After Kelley Gravlin extended the lead for the Tigers in the 62nd minute, Selena Peters took a beautiful pass from junior Gabby Rodriguez and played the ball down in the middle of the box. Peters fired a shot into the upper left corner for the first goal of her career.
Memphis would eventually add a goal from Kaitlyn Aikins late in the game to bring the score to 3-1.
"The last four games we have played really well against some great teams," Pfau said. "We have competed, played as a team and have not beaten ourselves. We gave everything we had tonight. and I cannot ask for anything more."
