HOUSTON - The Houston Cougar soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision at East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. on Thursday.
Houston outshot the Pirates 9-4 including putting four of the shots on goal, but was unable to find the net before time expired in regulation.
ECU got on the board early in the first half when junior Kendall Frey scored from 20 yards out in the 16th minute to give the Pirates the lead. Frey took a pass from Autumn Berry and put it in the left side.
"One of the things we focused on going into this weekend is being more competitive and staying in games on the road," head coach Chris Pfau said. "We did a very good job of this for the most part. The difference was a great goal from 20 yards out to win the game"
Houston controlled play for the majority of the second half and collected three of its four shots on goal in the final 15 minutes, but were unable to break through with the equalizer. Eight different Cougars finished the game with a shot including two from senior forward Alexis Weaver.
"This was a good game from both teams, and we did some really good things," Pfau said. "We just struggled from 20 yards out with creating opportunities, but we competed, knocked the ball around and showed that we can compete on the road, which will be huge going into the conference tournament."
