HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team announced the program's 2012-13 schedule on Monday afternoon. The Campus Recreation & Wellness center on Houston's campus will serve as the site for two postseason events including the ninth-straight year as the host for the Conference USA Championships and the first time to host the NCAA Zone Diving competition.
For second-year head swimming coach Augie Busch and 22nd-year head diving coach Jane Figueiredo, the schedule includes more top-flight competition than years past and less home meets.
"I'm really excited for our facility, Jane and her girls to not only get the opportunity to compete in the Zones, but to do so on your own boards, in your own pool" said Busch. "It's a sign of respect, and validation from around the country on what we're looking to accomplish, because the NCAA fully vets this process and being chosen to host something like this is a great source of pride for us."
The full schedule can be viewed by clicking here.
The Cougars will begin the season with their annual Red vs. White Intrasquad meet on Oct. 3. and then travel their only road trip outside of Houston during the fall season as they head to Miami (Fla.) for a trimeet at Florida International (Oct. 12-13).
Houston travels to Rice for the Rice Invitational (Oct. 26-27) before hosting their annual Phill Hansel Invite on Nov. 15-17. "Our Invite is becoming really popular due to the attention to details our staff and coaches put into running these meets," said Busch. "It is actually setting up to be one of the premier midseason meets in the country with teams like LSU, Arkansas, Texas A&M, and some other really talented programs coming to town."
"We think we have one of the top facilities in the nation and now it's time for us to make that next step and start competing with some of the best programs out there."
After the Invite, the team will take a break until the annual Hawaii Training Trip Jan. 2-12.
"The Hawaii Trip is an important part of this program's history. We do a great job of training without distractions and bonding as a team as we prepare to grind during the stretch."
After the training trip. Houston travels to UNT (Jan. 16) and then to LSU (Jan. 25-26) for a pair of road contests before wrapping up the regular season competition at Texas A&M (Feb. 2).
Houston hosts the C-USA Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 20-23 before the Zone Diving competition March 11-13. The NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships are set for March 21-23 in Indianapolis Ind.
