Asia’s Flying fish and national champion will be honored Friday night
HOUSTON – Legendary Singaporean swimmer Siong Ang Peng is one of nine athletes set to be inducted into the Hall of Honor, Friday night.Â
When Siong Ang Peng arrived in Houston, he already carried titles to his name. In 1977 he competed in the SEA (Southeast Asian) games, where he earned a silver medal in the 4x100 meter relay. In 1979 he was named "The fastest Asian swimmer".Â
At UH, the Singapore native became one of the most decorated swimmers in program history. In 1982, he won the 50-yard freestyle at the U.S. Swimming Championships with a time of 19.86 seconds, making him the only UH swimmer to win a national championship. The next year, he captured the 1983 NCAA title in the 50-yard freestyles, becoming Houston's last individual NCAA champion, and was ranked No. 1 in the world in the event.Â
Ang ended his career as a three-time All-American, setting Southwest Conference records in the 50m and 100m freestyle. He also still holds UH records in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 50-yard butterfly.Â
After Houston, he participated in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics for Singapore. He was coached by fellow UH legend Phil Hansel during this period. In between competing for world championship Ang returned to the university as a strength coach for the women's swim team from 1984-86. Â
