Finding Home in Houston: Michelle McLeod’s Final Dive

Three-time NCAA qualifier and Big 12 Conference Championship Diver of the Meet discusses her unique journey and expectations entering her senior season
HOUSTON – For Michelle McLeod, choosing the University of Houston was more than finding a place to compete. It was about finding a community.
When McLeod arrived in Houston, she was drawn to the team's welcoming atmosphere and the opportunity to experience life in a major American city. Now, as she enters her senior year, those same qualities remain at the heart of her Houston experience.
"I chose Houston for the team environment," McLeod said. "They seemed super welcoming and close. As a senior, it still feels that way."
Houston offered the unique opportunity she couldn't find at home in Canada, the chance to pursue both diving and her education at the same time.
"I feel really proud to be part of the Houston team, even though I'm not from the United States," she said.
That international identity is part of what makes McLeod's experience at Houston especially meaningful. She showed her appreciation and recognition of how the team's international presence has shown her how athletes from different places can come together to form a winning culture.
"It's exciting that people can come here from all over the world and have success and find community," McLeod said.
Now, with her final collegiate season ahead, McLeod is balancing ambition with an appreciation for the moment.
McLeod plans to shoot for the stars, with the goal of becoming a back-to-back conference champion and setting a new program record on platform. A mark she's been seeking since her freshman year.
"I've gotten super close and it's been a goal since freshman year," she said.
As a leader, her aspirations extend beyond scores and records. As a senior, she is thinking about the example she will leave behind.
"I want to continue to be a good leader and role model. I want to leave a legacy of hard work, kindness, and community."
That emphasis on presence and consistency has become central to how McLeod approaches her goals. She knows that another conference title or All-American honor won't be handed to her. Her plan for success prioritizes consistency and hard work.
"I'd love to win conference again, but that comes with working hard every day," McLeod said. "One of my goals is to be present and show up every day."
For McLeod, her senior season represents both an ending and another beginning. The final opportunity to compete for Houston while continuing to pursue ambitions beyond college diving.
But before she looks too far ahead, she wants to appreciate the season ahead of her.
"This year, first, I am hoping to have lots of fun and enjoy my senior year," she said.
That may ultimately be the clearest picture of McLeod's Houston career. The records, championships and honors matter, but so does the community she found along the way that helped make a Canadian diver feel at home in Houston.
With her senior season fast approaching, she knows the legacy she wants to leave behind. One of hard work, kindness and a culture that cultivates a winning mentality.
