Memphis, Tenn. - The University of Houston volleyball team won its sixth-straight match after defeating Memphis 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-15, 25-16) Sunday afternoon at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

"The most impressive part of today's match is that we struggled attacking on Friday but you can clearly see by the stats that we made improvements offensively throughout the entire match today," head coach Molly Alvey said. "Across the board everyone contributed significantly, offensively, and we were able to use all of our attackers to win.
"Road wins are very important and very difficult to come by. We are competing well on the road, which is very important to our success."
Houston opened the match to a 5-1 lead over the Tigers, but Memphis battled back to within two, 8-6. The Cougars went on to regain a 15-14 advantage before a 5-0 run pushed their lead to 20-15. Both teams traded points to end the run before a kill by Nwachukwu gave Houston a 25-18 win in the opening set.
Memphis jumped out to a 9-5 lead over the Cougars in the second set, forcing Alvey to call a timeout. Out of the break, the Tigers continued to control the set, playing to a 15-9 lead. Memphis went on to take a 22-15 lead before the Cougars went on 5-2 run to get within 24-20 of the Tigers. A kill by Vesna Jelic ended the Cougars' rally and gave Memphis a 25-20 win.
The Cougars played Memphis to a 7-7 tie to start the third set. The two teams traded points until a 6-1 run by UH gave them a 17-13 cushion. Memphis scored three quick points on Houston before calling their second timeout of the set. The Tigers scored the first point off the bench, but Houston scored the next six points to win 25-15. During the 6-0 run, Charuk connected on three kills for the Cougars.
