Orlando, Fla. - The University of Houston volleyball team was upset 3-2 (12-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-15, 5-15) by UCF Friday night at The Venue. With the loss, Houston falls to 16-6 on the season and 9-3 in Conference USA. The loss marks the Knight's first win over the Cougars in the all-time series.
Senior Lucy Charuk led the team with 16 kills and eight block assists. Junior Chandace Tryon added 10 kills and four block assists. Freshman Caitlin Ogletree finished with 38 assists and freshman Natalie Keck had 21 digs.
"Road wins are very difficult to come by," head coach Molly Alvey said. "I still believe that we are a very good team, but what we have to learn from tonight is how to be a good team at home as well as on the road."
Houston scored the first point of the match, but the Knights answered with an 8-0 run. UCF continued to build on its lead but it wasn't until the Cougars pulled within seven, 17-10, that the Knights called their first timeout. UH scored the first point out of the break on a Charuk kill, but the UCF lead was too much to overcome. The Cougars fell behind 1-0 in the match with a 25-12 loss in the first set.
UCF jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set, but the Cougars battled back to take a 10-9 lead. Houston extended its lead to 17-13, prompting a timeout from the UCF bench. Off the bench, UH continued to lead, 21-19, before closing out the set on a 4-0 run. With the 25-19 win, Houston evened the match 1-1.
The Cougars continued the momentum from the second set to the third, playing to a 16-12 lead. Houston nearly gave up its lead, allowing the Knights to tie the set 23-23, but a kill by Charuk and a UCF attack error gave UH the 25-23 win.
The Knights jumped out on Houston 7-1 in the third set and looked poised to tie the match. They built an 18-10 lead before holding off the Cougars 25-15.
In the final set, UCF took a 9-1 lead in over the Cougars before earning the 15-5 win.
