HOUSTON - The Houston Cougars defeated the Louisiana - Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns 2-0 Friday evening in Lafayette, La. Freshman Nicole Duarte and junior captain Stephanie Derieg scored two first half goals and that was all that goalkeeper Cami Koski and the defense needed for the victory.
Duarte and former club teammate and fellow freshman Kylie Cook were able to teamup for the game winner in the 16th minute. Cook crossed the ball in to a waiting Duarte who headed the ball with precision and pace into the back netting. The goal was Duarte's first as a Cougar and Cook was credited with her second assist of the season.
Derieg added the insurance goal in the 36th minute off another cross and notched her second career goal.
The Cougars relied on their deep bench and were able to run the up-tempo and aggressive attacking style of play that they prefer.
"It was a total team effort tonight," assistant coach Eric Quill said. " We were able to outshoot them (13-4) and we really limited their offensive opportunities. We played a lot of people and relied on our depth to get the win."
Koski, the goalkeeper, was hardly challenged and was able to earn a shutout in her first collegiate start and game.
The Ragin-Cajuns had three yellow cards compared to one booking for the Cougars.
Houston will remain in Louisiana until Sunday when they face McNeese State in Lake Charles at 1 p.m.
