Austin, Texas - The University of Houston volleyball team lost its season opener, 3-0, to TCU Friday afternoon at the Burnt Orange Classic in Austin, Texas.
Preseason All-Conference USA team selection Lucy Charuk led all Cougars with eight kills, while Amber Brooks paced the team with 18 assists.
Following the match, head coach Molly Alvey was quick to point out the positives from the match.
"We did a lot of things well in our first match," Alvey said. "We played well and managed our errors. Our serving efficiency increased from the preseason, and we got a chance to show what we can do and what people will have to look forward to in the future."
In the first set, Houston played a close game, but TCU was able to jump out to a 20-13 lead and held on for the win, 25-18. The Horned Frogs carried that momentum into the second set, taking the early lead, but the Cougars were able to battle back to within two at 22-20. The two teams traded points for the reminder of the game before TCU was able to hold on for the win, 25-23.
The Cougars had one final chance to extend the match in the third set, but they were never able to take the lead after scoring the opening point and the Horned Frogs secured the win, 25-17.
Amber Brooks, Alex Edwards and Christine Pinder each made their first career starts in the opening match.
Houston will be back on the court at 4 p.m. for a match against McNeese State.
"Going into this afternoon, we have to focus on playing clear and realized that errors are part of the match and that you move on from them," Alvey said. "We have play to win."
The tournament concludes at 6:30 p.m., Saturday when the Cougars take on tournament host Texas.
