HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team dropped its tournament finale to Texas, 3-0, at the Burnt Orange Classic in Austin, Texas on Saturday evening.
Ingrida Zauere, Lucy Charuk and Christine Pinder each recorded eight kills in the match, while Amber Brooks added 31 assists and Amanda Carson had 10 digs.
For her efforts in the Cougars' three matches at the tournament, Charuk was named to the Burnt Orange Classic All-Tournament Team.
"We got better as the weekend went along and we have that to build on," head coach Molly Alvey said. "As volleyball goes at any level you have to eliminate mistakes. Our passing struggled tonight, but when we were on we were on."
In the first set, Texas jumped out to a 3-0 lead but the Cougars battled back and took the lead at 6-5, holding it for the next five points. The Longhorns would chip away at the deficit to reclaim the lead and eventually pull away for the win, 25-19.
UH surrendered a 12-8 lead to the Longhorns before calling a timeout in the second set. Out of the break, Texas continued to dominate the set and easily took the 25-15 win.
With a final chance to extend the match, Houston scored the first point of the third set. They would take a 10-8 lead before Texas battled back to tie the set at 14-14. The two teams would trade points for much of the remainder of the set. With the score tied at 18-18, Texas scored the next seven points to close out the set and win the match.
With the loss, the Cougars finish the first weekend of the season with a 1-2 record.
