HOUSTON - The Houston soccer team defeated Marshall 3-0 on the strength of three second half goals that came during a 24-minute stretch to earn the victory and advance to the semifinals of the Conference USA Championship. Sami Sackos, Lauri Byrne and Jessica Zavalza scored the goals and Kaitlin Thulin provided two assists to get the Cougars their first C-USA Championship win in 11 years.
"We were patient and composed. Marshall stepped back a little bit and in the first half we were a little impatient. We talked about it at halftime, made a few adjustments, knocked the ball from side-to-side. We finished our chances in the second half and that was the difference maker between the two halves."
Houston (12-4-4) outshot the Thundering Herd 12 to one in the first half and 25-10 over the course of the match. The only thing slowing down the potent offense was the 10 offside calls the Cougars drew.
"That's something we will discuss but having that many attacking infractions shows the amount of pressure we were applying. You don't want to coach the players to play too passive and if we have to take 10 offside calls to go with three goals, I can live with it."
Sackos scored her fifth-goal of the year off a rebound from a Byrne shot in the 50th minute.
Byrne would find the net with her next shot as she drilled a shot from the right side 19 yards away from goal.
Zavalza added the final goal off a pass from Thulin inside the box after the defense had over-pursued the ball.
Freshman goalkeeper Cami Koski made four saves for her ninth shutout of their season.
Houston defeated Marshall (7-9-3) for the second time in two weeks and ended their season.
"Houston came out of the gate flying and they're a fast and athletic team," said Marshall head coach Kevin Long. "We were not able to break out with the pressure Houston was putting on us (in the second half). Houston played very well in the last 20 minutes to beat us in shot total to prove they were the better team tonight."
