HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team hits the road for the first time this season when it faces New Mexico State in Las Cruces Saturday. Tip-off at Pan American Center is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT.
The Cougars look to improve to 2-0 this season after kicking off the 2010-11 campaign with an 88-48 victory over UT Arlington on Sunday, giving first-year head coach Todd Buchanan his 100th-career victory.
Houston got off to a slow start against the Mavericks, going only 1-of-12 from the field in the opening seven minutes before going on a 14-1 run to open a comfortable lead. After UTA fought back to cut the double-digit deficit to five points, the Cougars put together a 22-4 run over the final 6:04 en route to a 43-20 halftime lead.
Five Cougars scored in double figures, led by seniors Courtney Taylor and Brittney Scott, who each tallied 18 points. Taylor notched her 41st-career double-double by adding 10 rebounds, while fellow senior Lesslee Mason notched her seventh-career double-double with 12 points and 11 boards in only 20 minutes.
Taylor, who jumped into 10th spot all-time at Houston with 1,246 career points, was named the Conference USA Co-Player of the Week for her efforts against the Mavericks.
ABOUT NEW MEXICO STATE
New Mexico State returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's squad that went 18-14 and advanced to the WNIT. The Aggies opened the season with three straight games on the road, dropping a 79-88 decision to North Dakota State before bouncing back with tight wins over North Dakota (82-81) and UTEP (80-75, OT).
The Aggies' high-powered offense (80.3 ppg) is led by Madison Spence, who averages 16.7 points per game. Seniors Jasmine Lowe and Tabytha Wampler have chipped in with an average of 14.7 points apiece.
SERIES HISTORY
The Cougars and Aggies have met six times on the hardwood dating back to the 1980-81 season, as Houston holds the 4-2 advantage. The two teams haven't met since Jan. 3, 2005, when UH fell by a score of 63-68 in Las Cruces. The Cougars have dropped both contests to the Aggies in the Pan American Center.
