Houston vs. Texas State Final Box
SAN MARCOS -- After battling through more than 80 minutes of scoreless action, sophomore Jessica Rathweg found the back of the net to lift the University of Houston soccer team to a 1-0 win over the Texas State Bobcats in San Marcos on Friday.
Houston (4-1-0) posted its fourth straight win, and after battling injuries to several key players early in the season, seems to have found a rhythm on the field.
"Hopefully we can ward off more injuries," Bush said. "We are doing well right now, but each weekend gets tougher and tougher and we haven't played anyone in conference yet."
The Cougars tallied the game's lone score in the 84th minute off a corner kick. Freshman free kick specialist Stephanie Derieg took the corner finding Rathweg, who headed the ball past goalkeeper Deborah Ross for the game-winner.
It was the first career goal for the Spring, Texas, native.
Senior captain Shelby Scott notched her third straight shutout. So far this season, Scott has allowed just two goals in more than 460 minutes of action for a Conference USA best 0.39 goals against average.
The Cougars outshot Texas State 14-7. But, with the game on the line in the second half, the Houston defense tightened up, holding the Bobcats to only a pair of shots in the final 45 minutes.
Junior Kaitlin Thulin and sophomore Lauri Byrne paced the team with three shots in the contest.
The Cougars return to action on Friday, as the team heads on to Waco to face Baylor at 1 p.m., Sunday.
Houston trails the all-time series 1-2 but posted a 2-0 win over the Bears last season in Houston.
