Houston vs. Stephen F. Austin Final Box
HOUSTON Senior goalkeeper Shelby Scott became the program's all-time leader in shutouts with nine, as she helped lead the University of Houston soccer team to 1-0 win over Stephen F. Austin on Sunday at the Carl Lewis Complex.
Scott entered Sunday's contest in a tie with former Cougar Robin Cate for the career mark with eight clean sheets. She was instrumental in preserving the win for Houston, foiling several good Ladyjack scoring opportunities late in the game.
"She didn't even play her freshman year and she has really improved each season," head coach Susan Bush said. "Coach Jenna Huff has really helped push her to improve and I contribute a lot of Shelby's success to the extra work they put in.
"But I'm very proud of Shelby, she's our captain and we look to her to help keep our team's composure out there on the field."
Houston (2-1-0) closed out the team's first two-game weekend with a perfect 2-0 record.
Freshman Stephanie Derieg provided the game's only goal in the 22nd minute, scoring on a free kick from around midfield. It was the first career goal for the Cougar free kick specialist.
"Stephen F. Austin is a great program," Bush said. "They have nine returning players from their NCAA tournament team last season and they are very well organized on the field.
"We have a lot to work on before our (next) game on Friday. We are creating good chances, but we need to finish them."
The Cougars outshot the Ladyjacks 14-9 but could not convert some quality scoring opportunities that could have put the game away.
Senior Christine Nieva played a ball through a pair of defenders to sophomore Lauri Byrne who turned upfield, but a heads up play by SFA keeper Courtney Bauder to come off her line defused the scoring chance.
Junior transfer Kaitlin Thulin added two more chances in the 26th minute, blasting a shot on goal from just outside the penalty box, but Bauder made the save.
Just over 30 seconds later, Thulin uncorked another shot but could only watch as it sailed just to the left of the post.
"We had a good number of chances out there today, but so did they," Bush said. "It was a very tight match, the ball just happened to bounce our way."
The Cougars will now begin preparations for their next game on Friday, Sept. 5, when Houston will play host to Louisiana-Lafayette. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Robertson Stadium.
