FORT WORTH, Texas - No. 22 TCU used a blazing hot shooting performance Tuesday night, firing at 57.6 percent as a team from the floor, to hand the University of Houston women's basketball team a 91-72 defeat at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
The loss drops the Cougars to 3-2 on the season, while TCU improves to 5-0 this year.
The Cougars did not get off to a good start in the road environment, as the Horned Frogs were lifted by a pair of early three-point baskets and jumped out to an 8-0 advantage.
UH fought back as freshman Porsche Landry finally got the Cougars on the board at the 17:20 mark and sophomore Courtney Taylor scored on the next possession to get the Cougars offense in gear; however, the Cougars still trailed at the first media time out 13-6. Landry finished play with 10 points on the night, while Taylor added 14.
Sophomore guard Roxana Button lead the way for UH with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field.
The TCU lead swelled to as many as 13 but UH remained resilient with back-to-back three point buckets from Landry to cut the lead to 27-22 with 9:36 to play and forced a Horned Frog timeout.
After a quick basket out of the break by TCU, the comeback effort continued as junior Ashlee' Joseph nailed back-to-back long jumpers to further chip away at the home, lead narrowing to just three, 29-26,with 8:07 remaining before halftime.
TCU was able to regain its composure late in the period and took control of the game with a 12-3 run to close the period and send the game to halftime with the home squad leading, 50-33. During the game's first 20 minutes, the Cougars shot well, making 14-of-35 field goals, but were unable to keep up with the Horned Frogs who shot a blistering 58.3 percent in the first half (21-of-36). At the break, TCU had three players in double-figure scoring (Eboni Mangum, Chantelle John and Rachel Rentschler), all with 10 points each.
More troubled awaited the Cougars out of the break, as they were guilty of six turnovers in the first five and half minutes of the second half allowing TCU to build a 70-42 advantage. The Horned Frogs remained red hot from the floor in the second half as they made nine of their first 13 shots after halftime.
An 8-0 run sparked by three pointers from Megan Morton and Button attempted to get the Cougars back in the game leaving them down 73-56 with just over nine minutes remaining. The run, however, proved to not be enough as TCU held on for its fifth victory of the season.
The Cougars shot 46 percent for the game, converting 29-of-63 shots from the field.
Houston's two-game road trip continues next Tuesday when they travel to Denton, Texas, to face North Texas.
