UH Women's Basketball Defeats Gardner-Webb 79-58

HOUSTON - Led by a balanced scoring attack which featured four players in double-figure scoring, the University of Houston women's basketball team improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2004-05 season by defeating Gardner-Webb, 79-58, Saturday at Hofheinz Pavilion.
"I think our depth really helped us tonight," said head coach Joe Curl. "We struggled on the defense a little more than we should. Coach Reeves has been around for a long time. We knew he was going to have a well coached team."
Sophomores Cobilyn Hill and Courtney Taylor each recorded double-doubles in the contest, with Hill scoring 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting with 13 rebounds and Taylor registering her 11th career double-double, producing 15 points and 14 boards.
Freshman standouts Roxana Button and Porsche Landry contributed with 12 points each, while sophomore Brittney Scott made 6-of-12 field goals, including a 4-of-7 mark from long distance, to end play with 17 points.
Button, who has tallied 29 points in her first two games as a Cougar, made it an early 7-4 lead with 18:11 to play in the opening period as she drained a three pointer. The Coppell, Texas, native made it 9-4 as she followed the trey with a long jumper, while fellow freshman Porsche Landry made back-to-back driving layups to spearhead a 11-0 run by the Cougars and force a Gardner-Webb timeout with UH leading 15-4.
Out of the break, the Runnin' Bulldogs went on a 6-0 spurt of their own to cut the home lead to only six at 16-10, but UH sophomore Brittney Scott stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer at the 9:16 mark.
Following a GWU bucket, it was Scott again who made an impression of the scoreboard, draining her second long distance field goal of the contest to put the Cougars back up by double digits at 22-12 with 8:01 to play.
A Taylor layup pushed the lead to 12, but a 9-1 run by Gardner-Webb shrunk the UH lead to 25-21 with just 3:56 before intermission.
Landry countered with four straight points for the Cougars and added a fast break assist for a streaking lay-up by Scott to make it a 6-0 UH run.
Four successful free throw attempts from Button and Taylor sent UH to the locker room with a 35-24 advantage.
Out of the intermission, the Cougars took eight of the period's first 10 points to build a 43-26 lead.
The game turned into a three point shootout contest during the middle of the second half with Jasmine Johnson and Scott dialing long distance for the Cougars while Courtney Epps and Ashley Falknor of Gardner-Webb also converted from beyond the arc.
UH's advantage slimmed to just 10 on a jumper by GWU's Margaret Roundtree, but Houston was able to get a nice basket from Hill on the low block and a three pointer from Scott to rebuild the lead to 15 points at 62-47 with 8:33 to play.
Down the stretch it was all UH as the Cougars outscored Gardner-Webb 16-3, yielding only one field goal in the final second of the contest.
For the game, Houston shot 37.9 percent from the field (25-of-66) while the Runnin' Bulldogs made 23-of-77 shots for 29.9 percent.
Houston will leave the friendly confines of Hofheinz Pavilion next for the first time this season when they travel to Corvallis, Ore., on Wednesday to face Oregon State.
