HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A 27-11 Southern Miss run in the last 10 minutes of the game led to the fourth-straight loss for the University of Houston women's basketball team, a 63-51 defeat in Conference USA action at Reed-Green Coliseum Sunday.
The Cougars (7-14, 4-7 C-USA) dropped their 11th-straight road game despite another strong game from All-America candidate Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue). Jackson finished with a game-high 24 points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.
The Golden Eagles (12-13, 6-6 C-USA) used a 9-2 run over two-and-a-half minutes to erase a five-point Houston lead, taking control at 44-42 with 8:51 left. Following a pair of 30-second timeouts by the Cougars, Southern Miss scored five-straight points to lead 49-42 with 7:38 to go. All told, UH was outscored 27-11 over the game's final 11:31 as UH scored only four field goals.
A 13-5 UH run out of halftime, erased the Golden Eagles' nine-point halftime lead, pulling the Cougars within one at 33-32 with 13:47 remaining. A pair of free throws from Jackson gave UH its first lead since early in the first half moments later. Some solid work on the fast break by Alona Obaze (Dallas, Texas/Bryan Adams HS/Trinity Valley CC) helped UH push the lead to five at 40-35 with 10:52 to go. Obaze had a steal, a layup and an assist on consecutive possessions.
Kendra Reed led Southern Miss with 22 points. Liz Biland added a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Southern Miss converted Houston's 27 turnovers into 28 points.
The Cougars trailed by nine at the half, failing to score a field goal in the final six minutes of the half and shooting 7-for-25 (.280) with 16 turnovers. Half of Southern Miss' points in the half were converted off of UH turnovers.
Houston took an early 7-5 lead with 14:26 left, but an 11-0 Southern Miss run over the next two minutes had the Eagles leading 16-7 with 11:49 to go. UH had the margin back to six on two occasions, but costly turnovers and cold shooting gave Southern Miss the 28-19 halftime lead.
Houston closes out a season-long four-game roadtrip next weekend, facing Tulsa at 7 p.m. CST Thursday and SMU at 2 p.m. Saturday.
