HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team gave up an early first-half goal and Memphis added two insurance scores in the second half to move to a 3-0 win Friday on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
Houston (4-6-1, 0-2 C-USA) has dropped four straight matches and have not tallied a goal in the past 320 minutes. Memphis (9-2, 2-0 C-USA) ran its win streak to seven games. During that span, the Tigers have outscored their foes by a 19-2 margin.
Emiko Schwab tallied two of the Memphis scores, including the game winner in the ninth minute. Schwab received the ball at her feet of a free kick from Melissa Smith. Schwab sent it to the back of the net, putting the Tigers up 1-0.
The Cougars played on their heels for most of the first half tallying only a single shot attempt while yielding 13 attempts to Memphis. UH's one shot, also its only shot on goal in the game came from Islara Rodriguez (Houston, Texas/Awty International School). Rodriguez dribbled through the defense and sent a bullet right at Memphis `keeper Isabel Briones who corralled it for the save.
Coming out the halftime break, UH played some inspired soccer for the first 15 minutes. Houston controlled the possession, tallied the majority of its six shots and spent most of the time in the Memphis third of the field.
In the 60th minute, Memphis countered and scored its second goal of the night. Harumi Someya sent the ball from the right corner into the box and Kylie Hayes headed it to the right corner of the net, out of the reach of UH goalkeeper Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS).
Schwab added the final goal of the night in the 64th minute off another service from Smith. Smith served the ball straight up the middle, catching Schwab in stride and after two dribbles; Schwab sent it to the right of a diving Scott.
The Cougars return to action Sunday, playing host to UAB at 1 p.m. on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
