NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane used a 16-5 run out of halftime to seal an 83-61 win over the University of Houston women's basketball team in Conference USA action at Fogelman Arena Friday.
Jami Montagnino finished with a game-high 33 points, knocking down seven three pointers. She finished 11-of-14 from the field, 7-of-9 from behind the line and 4-4 from the charity stripe with seven rebounds in 31 minutes.
Houston (4-9, 1-2 C-USA) was within two late in the first half, but could not get the deficit down under 18 in the second half. Tulane (12-3, 1-1 C-USA) won its third-straight over the Cougars and seven of eight overall.
Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) finished with 20 points, leading the Cougars. Whitney James (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial HS/North Oklahoma College) finished with 12 points and nine boards while Sunshine Misa-Uli (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Farrington HS/Barton County CC) finished with 10. Ashlee' Joseph (Houston, Texas/Booker T. Washington HS) pulled down a career-best 10 rebounds.
Trailing 40-24 at the break, Houston did not hit a shot for the first 2:20 of the second half and went into a 25-point hole, 52-27, with 16:32 left. From there it was academic and Tulane cruised to the 22-point win.
After turning the ball over just eight times against Rice on Jan. 2, UH reversed its fortunes, giving the ball up 18 times. Tulane converted those giveaways into 23 points. Houston held a 20-16 advantage on offensive rebounds, but Tulane converted their offensive boards into 23 second-chance points.
UH was handcuffed by poor shooting, firing at a 28-percent clip on the night. UH had been above the 30-percent line in the previous five games. A positive for the Cougars was their free throw shooting as UH knocked down 83 percent (20-24) of its shots from the line, including 16-17 in the second half.
Dominique Philpots was the only other Tulane player in double figures, closing the night out with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Tulane was out to a 18-6 lead in the first eight minutes as Montagnino dropped in her first four shots, all triples. UH withstood the onslaught and pulled off a 9-0 run to trail 18-15 with 10:27 remaining. A 4-0 run by the Green Wave moved the lead back to 22-15 with 7:59 left. From there, Tulane ended the half on an 18-4 run, paced by nine points from Montagnino, who finished the first half with 21 points.
Houston closes out this two game swing in El Paso, Texas Sunday with a 3 p.m. tipoff against UTEP in the Haskins Center.
