LAFAYETTE, La. - The University of Houston golf team rallied from a four-stroke deficit to win the team championship at the Louisiana Classics on Tuesday.
Trailing by four strokes entering Tuesday's final round, the Cougars posted a team score of 287, five strokes better than Baylor which held the first-day lead.
The Cougars finished the tournament at 18-under-par 846 to defeat the Bears by a single stroke. Memphis, SMU, Missouri, Southeastern Louisiana, Tulsa, Kent State, Rice and Colorado rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.
With the win, the Cougars won their third consecutive team championship to open the 2006 spring season. It marked the first time since the 1984-85 team won five straight tournaments to open the year that UH accomplished that feat.
Individually, junior Ricky Romano earned a second-place finish at 7-under-par after shooting a 73 in the final round. The Murietta, Calif., native finished two strokes behind medallist Jeremy Alcorn of Baylor.
Romano was one of three Cougars who finished among the Top 10 individual leaders. Senior Kevin Newman finished in a tie for third place at 6-under-par 210, while senior Zach Mowbray tied for third place at 3-under-par 213.
Sophomore Jordan Irwin tied for 29th at 218, while junior Pablo Acuna tied for 32nd at 219.
The Cougars look to win their fourth straight tournament when they compete at the Palmetto Intercollegiate on March 13-14. A year ago, UH claimed a share of the team championship when their travel plans forced it to leave before a playoff could decide the winner.
