LOS ANGELES - A poor offensive first half put the University of Houston women's basketball team into a hole it could not escape from as UH lost 65-42 Saturday at the Galen Center in the final game of the Women of Troy Classic.
After scoring 11 in the first half, the Cougars tallied 31 points in the second half. The Cougars never got USC's lead under the 20-point margin from halftime. The Women of Troy led by as many as 29, but UH used an 8-2 run in the final 2:27 to work it down to 23 at the final buzzer.
Houston (2-7) saw its two-game winning streak snapped while USC (6-4) earned its fourth-straight win over the Cougars and third-straight overall. The Cougars struggled from the free throw line, shooting just 3-for-12 (.250).
Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) was the only UH player to find double figures, finishing with 11 points. Jackson earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
USC was led by Shay Murphy's 15 points, Nadia Parker's 16 points off the bench and Chole Kerr's 12 points.
After leading 3-2 in the first half, not much went right for Cougars as they were outscored 32-8 in the final 16:47 of the half. The Cougars made just five field goals, shooting a shade over 20 percent (5-24/20.8). UH had more turnovers (14) then points in the half and USC converted those turnovers into 13 points.
UH's 11 points in the opening half was the second-fewest points allowed all time by the Women of Troy and the worst single-half output in school history. The Cougars were also outrebounded badly, 27-13. USC had 13 offensive rebounds, equaling UH's total output on the boards. Murphy had 10 points in the half for the Women of Troy, the 35th-straight game she's finished in double figures.
Houston returns home for its final game at Hofheinz Pavilion in 2006, taking on the University of Miami (Fla.) Tuesday at 7 p.m. CST.
