Houston Women's Basketball senior Sancho Lyttle has been invited to attend the 2005 WNBA Draft. The event is set to begin at 11 a.m. CDT in Secaucus, N.J., on Saturday, April 16. ESPN2 will provide live first-round coverage of the WNBA Draft until noon. The second and third rounds can be seen on NBATV.
Lyttle is expected to be a first-round pick in this year's draft according to analysts Nancy Lieberman, Rebecca Lobo and Kara Lawson. The Charlotte Sting own the first pick, followed by the Indiana Fever, Phoenix Mercury, San Antonio Silver Stars, Houston Comets, Washington Mystics, Detroit Shock, Connecticut Sun, Sacramento Monarchs, New York Liberty, Minnesota Lynx, Seattle Storm and Washington.
Nancy Lieberman, ESPN analyst and Hall of Famer posted on WNBA,com that, "Bill Laimbeer (head coach of the Detroit Shock) would love to be able to put Lyttle on his team, and it would be a good fit. She can play the top of a press, is long and active and can dunk. She also likes to defend and there's talk that Laimbeer might even look to trade up to ensure he can get Lyttle in the draft."
If Lieberman's prediction is true, Lyttle would once again be playing alongside her old teammate Chandi Jones (00-04) who currently plays for the Shock. Other Lady Cougars who have played in the WNBA include Margo Graham (91-93), Monica Lamb (83-85), and Pat Luckey (93-96).
Lyttle finished the 2004-05 season leading the nation in rebounds with a total of 362, for an average of 12.1 boards per game. She also averaged 18.8 points, 1.5 assists 1 block and 3.1 steals per game. She was 26th in the nation in scoring, and tied for 19th in steals.
Coach Joe Curl said, "I know Sancho will be a tremendous asset to which ever team picks her. We haven't seen her best basketball. She will only keep getting better. We are so proud of her."
