HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston women's basketball team took the lead in the first minute and never looked back, earning a 66-57 win over visiting Long Beach State at Hofheinz Pavilion Sunday.
Sha'Ratta Hawkins (Houston, Texas/Jesse Jones HS) followed up her career-best 28 points at Wisconsin Friday by leading UH (1-1) in scoring for the second-straight game. The freshman guard had a game-high 14 points along with seven rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.
Trailing by eight at the half, the 49ers (0-2), came back from 14-points down to tie it up at 45 with 12:26 left. The visitors used a 16-2 over a 4:53 span to get back to even with UH. During that time, UH was plagued by six turnovers and only four offensive chances.
After the teams traded treys, UH roared back with a 10-0 run over 2:18, keyed by a pair of three pointers on consecutive possessions from Jasmin Moore (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek HS), to lead 58-48 with 7:49 left. That would be all the cushion that UH would need as they never let LBSU get closer then eight in the final seven minutes and closed out the nine-point triumph.
Moore was one of four UH players to finish in double figures. She has 12 points, all coming on a 4 for 8 shooting night from behind the arc. Ryan Meyers (Arlington, Texas/Arlington HS/Grayson County CC) just missed out on her first collegiate double-double as she finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Her nine boards tied for the game high with LBSU's Jayme Connors.
Becky Gibson (Macon, Ga./Westside HS/Coffeyville CC) added a career-best 12 points, shooting a perfect 8 for 8 from the charity stripe. She also added four assists and committed just two turnovers.
UH moved out to an early 9-4 advantage on a strong shooting performance in first four minutes of the game. LBSU was within three twice, but a 15-4 UH run, started by a three from Kadi Creel (Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville HS) at the 11:35 mark and ended by four-straight free throws from the Cougars at 6:03, put UH up 14, 29-15.
A 7-0 run for the 49ers had them back in at 29-22 with 3:43 left. UH responded with a free throw from Emily Fryters (Adelaide, SA, Australia/Concordia College) and another three from Creel to move the advantage back to double figures at 33-22 with 3:32 left in the half. Creel's three would be UH's last field goal of the half as the teams traded misses over the final minutes of the opening stanza. UH headed into the locker room with a 35-27 advantage.
LBSU did not have a player break into double figures with Connors and Karina Figueroa tallying nine points apiece. The 49ers were plagued by a .182 (4 for 22) effort from behind the arc and were outrebounded by a 40-34 margin.
UH plays its third game in five days on Tuesday at Middle Tennessee State. Tipoff with the Blue Raiders is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST at MTSU's Charles M. Murphy Athletic Center. MTSU is 0-1 after dropping its season opener to Chattanooga, 76-66, on Nov. 18.
